LRHS senior class raises funds at fair

Lind-Ritzville High School seniors Devin Schafer and class Co-President Lakai Panter have attended the annual Wheat Land Communities’ Fair over the years. However, the 2018 fair was the first year the two students participated in a dunk tank.

The LRHS senior class ran the dunk tank at the fair on Sept. 1 to raise money for the senior class trip.

The dunk tank was one of the new activities at the WLCF. Throughout the afternoon, fairgoers had the opportunity to dunk Panter, Schafer and their classmates

People who paid $5 received five chances to throw a baseball at the target and dunk a LRHS senior. Fairgoers who gave $10 were allowed to walk up, press the target and drop the student into the tank.

LRHS senior class Co-President Kierstin Witt explained the class was seeking opportunities to raise funds for the class trip.

The students contacted the WLCF board, who allowed the class to run the activity. Other than paying a vendor fee, the senior class kept the proceeds from the dunk tank.

“It was nice of them to do that,” Witt said about WLCF board allowing them to run the activity.

In addition to raising money for the trip, she noted running the dunk tank provided the senior class an opportunity to be more involved with the fair, and have a presence in the community.

Both Panter and Schafer said they enjoyed participating in the dunk tank during the fair. Although the water was cold, both students liked seeing the smiles on children’s faces when they successfully hit the target to drop them into the water.

The dunk tank was not the only means of fundraising for the senior class during the fair. Several LRHS seniors worked shifts at the cook shack during the Saturday night performance of the 49th annual Ritzville Rodeo.

Witt added the funds from working at the cook shack will help pay expenses for the class’ graduation ceremony.

With the fair finished, she said the senior class will collect cans, sell apparel and brainstorm other fundraising ideas throughout the school year.
