Emergency crews respond to collisions, RV fire

Area first responders had another busy week responding to auto collisions and an RV fire.

The Washington State Patrol and Lind Fire Department responded to two separate one-vehicle rollovers on Highway 395 near milepost 68 on Aug. 16.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, Jonathan Bakker, 19, of Richland, was driving a 1994 Toyota Corolla along Highway 395 in the right lane.

Bakker was approaching a slower vehicle when he swerved to the left to avoid a collision. Bakker overcorrected and rolled off the roadway to the right.

Bakker and passenger Valerie Long, 19, were transported by private vehicle to receive medical attention.

The second passenger, Noah Bakker, 18, was transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

WSP listed the cause of the collision as inattention. Bakker was charged with second-degree negligent driving.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

Lind Assistant Fire Chief Mike Doyle said the department deployed three vehicles to the incident.

On Aug. 17, Lind Fire crews responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 395 at milepost 72 at around 10:30 p.m. Doyle noted the department sent two vehicles to the scene. He explained the driver of a vehicle rear-ended a Chevy truck and caused it to enter the median.

The Lind Fire Department also sent two vehicles to a collision on Interstate 90 at on Aug. 18 around noon. Details of the incident were not available as of press time.

On Aug. 19, Lind Fire deployed two trucks to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 395 at milepost 83. Doyle explained a vehicle rear-ended a car.

On Aug. 21, the Ritzville Fire Department responded to an RV fire at the Days Inn.

Captain Dave Breazeale said the department received the call around 6:55 a.m. Ritzville deployed three trucks with 10 firefighters to the scene.

ACSO and the Ritzville Police Department assisted at the scene. Crews were at the incident for an hour and a half.

Breazeale explained the fire was contained to the left rear driver’s side-wheel well and hot water tank.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
