Inslee declares statewide emergency for wildfires

On July 31, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee signed an emergency proclamation for the 39 counties in the state, ensuring immediate response of firefighting resources to protect businesses and property from wildfire threats.

In a news release, Inslee said the proclamation ensures resources are available to help protect communities during the fire season.

The proclamation allows the Washington National Guard to assist in firefighting efforts. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requested the aid of the Washington National Guard to combat fires in Eastern Washington.

It also instructs the Washington State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to coordinate all assistance to areas affected by wildfire. EOC was activated and has assisted DNR and the State Fire Marshal’s Office in fighting wildfires.

DNR is recommending the public take precaution in preventing wildfires by refraining from lighting fireworks, campfires in prohibited areas, parking on grass and throwing cigarettes from vehicles.

Homeowners should also ensure brush and wooden debris is removed from the perimeter of their structures.
