Broncos track team places ninth in State

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague track and field team traveled to compete in the 2B State Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington University on May 24-26, and returned home with a collection of hardware.

With three LRS women qualifying to compete at State, the athletes garnered a ninth place finish out of 31 teams in the 2B division.

The three senior athletes competing were Rose Melville, Rachel Schell and Sierra Kiel.

Melville started off the Broncos successful outing with a seventh place finish in the 1600-meter race on May 26.

After qualifying for the second day of competition in the preliminary races, Melville went on to secure fourth place in the 800-meter on May 26.

She rounded out her State experience with a fourth place finish in the 3200-meter race.

Schell raced in the preliminaries and qualified for the second day of competition in both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints.

On Saturday, Schell went on to secure a second place finish in the 200, and seventh in the 100.

Kiel competed in the high jump contest and showed her growth during the season by setting a personal record to earn her second place in State.

Kiel cleared five-feet at the State Championships, which is two inches higher than her previous record.

100: 7, Schell 13.28.

200: 2, Schell 26.64.

800: 4, Melville 2:26.44.

1600: 7, Melville 5:30.83.

3200: 4, Melville 11:58.45.

High jump: 2, Kiel 5-00.
