The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos concluded their 2017 season in the second round of the Northeast 2B District 7 Tournament on Nov. 2.
The Lady Broncos lost a three-set semifinal match against Colfax: 12-25, 18-25, 12-25.
Head Coach Cari Galbreath said she thought the Lady Broncos tried to adjust to Colfax’s playing style, though their contest at the District match was the best match LRS played against the Lady Bulldogs all season.
Galbreath said the team put up a good effort during the set where they scored 18 points. She also felt the team could have won the set if they had played more consistently on the court.
Following their match against Colfax, LRS was eliminated from the tournament after their five-set loss to St. George’s: 24-26, 25-13, 25-14, 16-25, 11-15.
After losing a close first set, the Lady Broncos won the next two to take a 2-1 lead. St. George’s fought back to win the fourth and fifth games to clinch the match and a spot in the consolation finals.
Similar to LRS’ match against Colfax, Galbreath felt the Lady Broncos were not playing consistently on the court against the Lady Dragons.
She also acknowledged St. George’s being the host team gave the Lady Dragons momentum going into the match.
“At the end of the day, I know we were the stronger team and could have come out on top,” Galbreath added.
There was one bright moment for LRS at the District Tournament. After the Lady Broncos’ match against Colfax, Peyton Curtis was selected for the Northeast 2B South All-Opponents Team.
The Lady Broncos finish the season with 7-3 record in league play and 10-7 overall.
Galbreath said she felt this season for LRS had a mixture of great moments and occasions where they struggled. She hopes the athletes realize if they work as a team, it will lead to having fun and excelling on the court.
The Lady Broncos will lose Emma Aldrich, Tessa O’Brien, Rachel Schell, Curtis, Alarah Pierce-Pulliam and Sierra Kiel, who will all be graduating in the spring. Galbreath said all six athletes brought experience and “flow” to the team, and they will be missed.
Galbreath is excited for next season as starting players Lacey Miller, Kierstin Witt, Ellie Gering and Eliza Galbreath are expected to return.
Athletes like Julia Klein, Mercedes Miller and Brinley Moore were swing players toward the end of this season and are expected to move up to varsity next year.
