Bronco runners continue to stride through the season

The Broncos boys and girls cross country teams entered the last leg of the regular season. Four athletes from the Broncos’ team competed at the District 7 1B/2B League race at Mary Walker High School on Oct. 3.

Rose Melville won the girls’ three-mile varsity race with a time of 20 minutes and 18 seconds while Hannah Brittain finished the race in 25:23.

Ethan Hughes finished the three-mile boys’ varsity race in 31:08, while Erik Hughes clocked in at 31:56.

No team scores were recorded for the Broncos due to lack of eligible runners.

Head Coach Liz Melville explained the race course at Mary Walker High School was shorter than previous meets at Northwest Christian and the Tekoa Golf Course, which were both 5,000 meter races. Coach Melville said when she calculated their speeds, all four runners would have had personal records if the race was 5,000 meters.

Coach Melville said she is pleased with the progress the four runners have made during the season. She added there are a few Broncos runners who are recovering from injuries and hopes they will be eligible to compete at the final District 7 1B/2B League meet at Kettle Falls on Oct. 10.

Coach Melville added the athletes who have already qualified for Districts will compete at the Oct. 14 Wildcat Invitational at the Big Bend Golf and Country Club in Wilbur.
