Broncos compete in league race at Tekoa

The Broncos Cross Country team resumed their season in a 2B League race held at the Tekoa Golf Course on Sept. 26.

Rose Melville won the girls’ 5,000 meters varsity race with a time of 21 minutes and 57.9 seconds, 11 seconds faster than second-place winner Maia Dykstra of Asotin.

Hannah Brittain finished the race in 29:33.56, which was 7 minutes faster than her previous time of 36:53.61.

On the boys’ side, Ethan Hughes finished the race in 35:01.23 while Erik Hughes clocked in at 36:27.20, a season-best performance for both athletes.

No official team scores were recorded for the Broncos boys and girls teams due to a lack of eligible runners. Teams must have at least five eligible runners to qualify for team scoring.

Head Coach Liz Melville said the Tekoa Golf Course was another tough race for the athletes as it did not feature rolling hills like other race courses. Instead the Tekoa Golf Course had miniature hills, which provided some difficulity for the Broncos runners.

“This led to our bad luck as far as injuries go,” Coach Melville said. “Both Clayton (Miller) and Mya (Lynch) had crashes on a hill that led to a sprained ankle and a sprained knee respectively.”

Melville noted cross country can be a demanding sport and is unsure of Miller and Lynch will be able to compete in the last two races. However, she said the runners on both teams are continuing to improve each week and will have to work as hard as they can “and see where it takes them.”

Four Broncos runners competed in the Pasco Bulldog Invite on Sept. 30.

In the 5,000 meters varity girls’ race, Rose Melville finished fifth overall with a time of 21:06.6 while Brittain clocked in at 28:07.2, a personal record for both girls.

In the two-mile boys’ junior varisty race, Ethan Hughes once again achieved a personal record after he finished in 20:12.8 while Erik Hughes also captured a new personal record after he clocked in at 21:27.9.

The team was scheduled to compete in a 2B League race at Saint George’s on Oct. 3.
