It always surprises me when community feedback to the city, albeit rare, comes in the form of complaints.
We’ve received complaints from local citizens about the condition of the city cemetery over the Memorial Day weekend.
These include grass too high, grass too brown and possible “scars” in the grass.
There are some things folks aren’t aware of.
The city staff takes great pride in their jobs and it’s a personal affront to those that work every day to make this community better. Every city employee has buy-in: from the city police department to administrative staff.
These complaints are especially insulting to our public works department that takes care of your streets, water, sewer and parks.
Our cemetery is no exception. What many don’t know is we just exited a severe winter that sunk and toppled headstones, broke water lines and sunk other areas.
Our water supply has been on the backup system, awaiting completion of our new well and upgrades to our existing backup well. Delays on both these wells have been frustrating at best.
What many also don’t know is that I have asked that all city properties ration irrigation water to allow residents to use water uninterrupted and in the desired quantities.
The parks, golf course and cemetery have been cut back so I did not have to ask residents to quit watering.
It’s disappointing that a few choose to act immaturely and criticize the very people that take city beautification most seriously.
The city crew spent over two months this spring fixing the “mess” at the cemetery to make it presentable for this past weekend.
They have dealt with this year’s disadvantages with optimism and hard work.
For those unhappy with the job they do, please contact city hall and offer to help. The city shouldn’t and won’t make excuses for doing the best we can.
We should all thank the public works crew every day for their dedication and professionalism in keeping our community attractive.
