LRS Broncos golf team places in top 15 at State Tournament

The Broncos golf team had a successful end to their season as two members competed in the State Tournament on May 22 and May 23.

Head Coach Nick Weishaar and athletes Tessa Jantz and Michael Shields traveled to MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake to compete in the two-day tournament.

Weishaar said the oppressively warm weather on Tuesday affected the athletes’ mentally and physically for the first day of the tournament.

Despite the rising temperatures, Shields advanced to the second day by earning a score of 84. Weishaar said Shields was pleased with how he competed on Tuesday and they achieved one of his goals of advancing to the second day.

Jantz shot a 94 the first day, which proved to be one of her highest scores during the season. She advanced to the second day of the tournament in 18th place.

Weishaar said Jantz set an individual goal for herself to compete to the best of her ability on Wednesday in order to move up in the rankings.

The temperatures cooled down for the second day of the tournament with winds blowing 20 to 30 miles per hour, said Weishaar.

He stated the wind also affected the athletes’ game as it made the direction of their shots unpredictable.

Shields teed off in the early morning and claimed a score of 88 for the day. He finished 14th out of 40 boys, which Weishaar said is an impressive standing.

Determined to improve her ranking, Jantz started the day playing solid with a 43 at the turn, said Weishaar.

She went on to par seven of nine holes on the back, and posted a 39 for the back nine.

With an overall score of 82, she moved up the standings to 10th place.

Weishaar said he is very proud of how the senior athletes performed at the tournament and is pleased they could finish their high school golfing careers on a high note.

“The 2017 Broncos golf season in a nut shell was filled with greatness,” stated Weishaar.

He said the athletes showcased continuous growth in their skills throughout the season.

The senior athletes provided strong leadership to the team, he explained. As for the younger athletes, Weishaar said they remained eager to improve and were successful in achieving some of their goals for the season.

Overall, he said the team had a lot of fun competing at a variety of 18-hole courses including Dominion Meadows, Quail Ridge, Stone Ridge and Deer Park.

He is looking forward to coaching the returning athletes next season and seeing how much they improve within the year.
