Jantz takes second at StoneRidge, six athletes advance to Districts

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos golf team traveled to the StoneRidge Golf Course on Tuesday, May 2, for their final league match of the regular season.

Cusick hosted the match, which included Asotin, Colfax, Odessa-Harrington, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, Northwest Christian, Tekoa-Rosalia, Saint George’s and Wilbur-Creston.

The LRS boys who competed in the match were Michael Shields, Morgan Brausen, Spencer Gering, Easton Nelson and Dirk Dahlman.

Veteran athlete Shields led the team with a score of 87 and Dahlman trailed close behind with 89.

Nelson scored a 100, Brausen followed him by one point with 101 and Gering shot a 125.

Competing for the Broncos girl’s team were Tessa Jantz, Ellie Gering and Brinley Moore.

Jantz led the team with a score of 86 and claimed second place as an individual. Gering shot a 113 and Moore earned a score of 128.

Head Coach Nick Weishaar said overall he is happy with how the athletes competed. The veteran athletes continue to display solid efforts and advance skill on the course, he added.

He said the younger athletes are showcasing improvement as well in their overall technique and scores.

The minor frustration on the green from the younger athletes proves to Weishaar they are beginning to understand the complexity of the game, he explained.

“It takes working through frustration in order to improve and become better,” he added.

The team traveled to Deer Park on Monday, May 8, to compete in the Sub-District 7 Tournament.

The athletes who competed were Shields, Dahlman, Nelson, Brausen, Spencer Gering, Devin Schafer, Jantz, Ellie Gering and Moore.

Shields led the boys’ team with 80 and Dahlman scored a 94. Nelson earned a score of 96 and Brausen trailed close behind with 99.

Also for the boys’ team, Gering shot a 111 and Schafer scored a 114.

For the girls’ team Jantz shot an 89. Gering earned a score of 116 and Moore shot a 132.

Shields, Dahlman, Nelson, Brausen, Jantz and Ellie Gering will be advancing to the District 7 Tournament on Tuesday, May 16, at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.

Weishaar said he is pleased with how the athletes competed in the tournament as they showcased improvement in their overall skills.

He stated having six of the nine athletes who competed in the Sub-District Tournament advance to Districts is a large accomplishment. Weishaar added he is looking forward to watching the six athletes compete for an opportunity to continue their season.

With many young athletes on the team, Weishaar said he anticipates seeing growth and improvement in the team for next season.
