AAUW to recognize three area scholars

The Ritzville Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will honor high school scholars at the chapter’s regular monthly meeting on April 12. The recognition event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Emanuel Lutheran Church social room.

Each student will receive an AAUW Certificate of Excellence, issued by the AAUW of Washington. The AAUW scholars program honors young women who excel in science, mathematics and technology, and encourages them to continue their studies and careers in these fields.

The students are selected by the staff of their respective high schools. From Lind-Ritzville High School, Emma Aldrich has been selected for both math and science. She is the daughter of Jason and Jennifer Aldrich.

After high school, Aldrich plans on attending college and studying bioengineering or biochemistry. She also plans to attend graduate school with the intent of conducting her own research, or to become a professor.

From Sprague High School are Rose Melville and Kikyo Sahashi. Melville has been selected for science, and Sahashi for math.

Melville is the daughter of Liz Melville, and Sahashi is a Japanese exchange student living with the Melville family. After high school, Melville plans to attend CSU Monterey Bay to study marine biology or zoology, while still playing competitive tennis.

Sahashi will return to Japan at the conclusion of the school year, and she plans to attend college in Japan.

The scholar program through the AAUW is open to the public.

The event will begin with a potluck-style salad bar.
