Another Week in the books

Weird week wasn’t it? So there is no school on MLK Day of course but then the weather took over. School for half a day and then there is freezing rain which closes school around 12:30.

The next two days started off as two hour delays and would end off closing for the day.

Practices have been canceled and games have been postponed. It isn’t easy getting any continuity with teams that really need it. Let’s hope there aren’t any school and game postponements the rest of this season.

Best Choice for Eastern

If you read this column last week you read about EWU head football coach Beau Baldwin announcing that he would be leaving Cheney for the San Francisco Bay area to become the new offensive coordinator for the Cal Bears. It took less than a week for Eagle Athletic Director Bill Chaves to announce their new head football coach.

Offensive line coach Aaron Best is the new head man for the Eagles and also has been around Cheney the longest. Best played for the Eagles in the 1990s and has been coaching Eagle linemen for over a decade.

He has coached some good ones including Michael Roos who had a 10 year pro career playing for the Tennessee Titans. Roos also donated $500,000 to EWU to help make improvements. This included the red turf at the stadium that is now known as Roos Field or the inferno.

Best coached several All-Americans at EWU so he knows what he is doing. After the Eagles went 6-5 with an experienced line in 2015, it looked like it might be a tough go in 2016 because all of the starters had graduated.

This season Best took a bunch of freshman and sophomores who were ready to go to work and that bunch did a great job protecting QB Gage Gubrud. The Eagle offense set several records for yardage in big games and that all starts with the line.

I believe Chaves has made the right choice and it allows the coaches that were still at EWU to remain coaching and building a great program. I’m thinking the Eagles won’t miss a beat and the recruiting class should help the Eagles to continue being successful. Aaron is certainly the ‘Best’ choice for Eastern football going forward.

Matt and Julio down at the Georgia Dome

I think there were a lot of people that just knew that it was going to be the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots playing in the 51st Super Bowl.

If you read the sports stories or listened to the pundits on the TV and radio you just knew that Aaron Rodgers would do no wrong and the Packer defense would blow up the Atlanta Falcon offense.

Well, that certainly didn’t happen as the Falcons celebrated their last game in the Georgia Dome by routing the Pack 44-21.

I know there are a lot of Packer fans out there but I’m just tired of hearing how Rodgers would carry the team on his back and win the day.

Maybe if the game was played at Lambeau Field in January but certainly not the way the Falcons have been lighting up the scoreboard in Atlanta, indoors.

Julio Jones made the Packer secondary look very inadequate. He and QB Matt Ryan played pitch and catch and Julio is very fast in the open field.

Jones gained 180 years on nine receptions and two touchdowns. Jones is good but Sunday he was great.

I’m hoping for a good Super Bowl but I would be just as happy if the Falcons blew out the Patriots to earn their first championship. Can you tell I don’t like New England?

Maybe this Super Bowl isn’t what many fans were wanting because Green Bay versus New England would have been must see TV. I’m thinking that Atlanta will do just fine. Until next time weather permitting, happy sports day!
