Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
2016 is finally in our rearview mirror and the start of a new year is always an opportunity to be optimistic about the future.
I think we all look forward to a “better” year, regardless of how we define that individually.
Changes have taken place at the City of Ritzville as well. Articles from time to time in this paper have informed (and perhaps amused) you on the arduous budget process we must go through each year leading up to Jan. 1.
For 2017 the City Council, finance committee, city staff and myself have all experienced some heartburn over how to best serve the community in the most efficient and responsible manner.
Our ordinance for local business registration was initiated about four years ago, and only out of town solicitors had an annual fee to conduct business in Ritzville.
We now need to incorporate a $30 annual fee for local businesses as well.
There are several reasons: First, voluntary registration until now has been somewhat inconsistent.
I estimate around 60 percent of all local businesses register each year with the city. While it isn’t mandatory, registration helps us know the sources of sales tax within Ritzville.
Second, this is not a punishment or a revenue source for the city. Administrative overhead is always an issue, but this won’t provide major revenue for us.
Third, it allows us a vehicle for serving your business in the community. City Hall receives inquiries throughout the year for local businesses.
We’re asked about such things as roofing or remodeling contractors, locations and other information on all types of businesses as well.
Registration gives us a list of hair salons, tanning facilities and other retailers for example.
Many out of town folks pass through Ritzville and contact city hall for those businesses.
Many visitors are here for the day or overnight and have money to spend in our town.
I ask all local businesses to visit city hall by mid-February and register your business.
As your city, we see this as a way to better serve you.
