What’s up?

It’s time to take a look at the happenings of last week just because. The World Series went seven games, which is appropriate since both teams have been waiting so long to win it all.

After leading the series three games to one the Cleveland Indians were unable to close out the deal at Wrigley Field and then let the Chicago Cubs blow them out in game six.

Game seven looked like another easy game for the Cubs but the Indians wouldn’t quit and came back to tie the game up late in the innings.

Now game seven was a classic but certainly wasn’t perfect as the winning team committed three errors and the losing team had one and a high throw to the plate at important times.

You can say that Cubs Manager Joe Maddon got lucky and maybe he did. He used his closer to try to get at least six outs in the last three games when closers are usually only called upon to get three outs.

Aroldis Chapman can throw the ball over 100 miles per hour, but he was running on fumes by the ninth inning.

For anyone that watched the baseball playoffs one thing was noticeable, the games were not going to be managed as if it was a regular season game.

Starters more often than not weren’t around by the end of the fifth inning. The teams were stuck with the World Series roster.

How many times did teams go to the AAA roster to get a spot starter or a fielder or a relief pitcher during the regular season?

Well, not in the World Series. It’s pretty important to have the talent to win it on those rosters and you can’t have any regrets with your choices.

As it should be the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs played an extra inning to decide the champion. But first there was a rain delay.

All of the fans for both teams were on edge holding out hope that their team could shake off the cobwebs of so many “wait until next year’s” season.

In the top of the tenth the Cubs scored twice and in the bottom of the inning the Indians answered with one of their own.

The pitcher starting the 10th inning was former Spokane Indian Carl Edwards, Jr. After getting the first two outs Edwards would walk a batter and would give up a hit to close it to a one run game.

Enter former Seattle Mariner pitcher Mike Montgomery who came in and got a grounder to end the game for his very first save as a major league pitcher.

I had a difficult time rooting for either team because I had reasons to want both of these clubs to come out as the world champions. I guess I know more Cub fans than Indian fans so it’s all good.

Manager Joe Maddon and this great Cubs team have lifted the curse. Baseball needed a series like this to get fans to enjoy the game again. Hopefully those inquisitive fans will be around next season as well.

If you are a fan of football in the state of Washington you should be happy this season. Washington is undefeated at 9-0; the Cougars have rattled off seven straight wins to go to 7-2 and Eastern Washington is 8-1.

All three teams are undefeated in their conference with the Huskies and Cougs tied at 6-0 in the Pac-12, and the Eagles at 6-0 in the Big Sky heading into their final two weeks of league play before the playoffs begin.

The Cougars and Huskies are both bowl eligible but the Huskies have a shot at playing in the National Championship four-team playoff if they win out and win the Pac-12 championship game.

By the way, the Cougars can play spoiler and play in the Pac-12 championship if the stars align just right.

The Seattle Seahawks are leading the NFC West division with a 5-2-1 record. Russell Wilson looked a lot more comfortable running the ball Monday in a wild game played in Seattle.

Lastly, LRS Bronco freshman Spencer Gering scored on a 97-yard touchdown scamper Friday night at Jimmie Snider Field.

On Oct. 24, 1969, Randy Spencer did the same thing on the home turf against the Grand Coulee Tigers. In the fall of 1962, John Wellsandt also scored on a 97-yard run.

Spencer Gering’s run was a bit unique as he made three spin moves to avoid tackles that bounced him outside and it was a foot race from there and no Davenport Gorilla was going to catch him.

It will be tough for that young man to top that play but I know he will certainly try.

So that was what was up this past week. I hope you witnessed some of it.
