Sheriff Wagner honored for completing NSI program

Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner completed participation in the 111th session of the National Sheriff’s Institute (NSI) held in Aurora, Colorado on Sept. 19-23.

Sponsoring the program since the early 1970’s are the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) and the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA). The NSI is the only national executive development program designed for sheriffs.

The training focused on the challenges sheriffs in America face today and provided information on establishing a leadership role for the public in public safety, criminal justice system policy, community relations and organization effectiveness and efficiency, stated the NSI.

According to the NSI, in order to accommodate to the needs of first-term sheriffs, participants of the training learn skills applicable to the challenges they face and are taught within the framework of the sheriff’s experience.

The program emphasizes the fundamentals necessary to establish a leadership role in the community for first-term sheriffs and effective organizational skills.

A variety of instructional strategies are incorporated in the training including lecture, small group work, individual activities and self-assessments stated the NSI.

Participants complete a self-assessment based on concepts presented in the class at the end of each module to determine how they handle these challenges and what information they obtained from the class on improvement.

NSA Manager of Training Hilary Burgess said, “Sheriff Wagner is a leader with vision for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. It is an honor to have Sheriff Wagner join the more than 2,800 graduates of the NSI since 1973.”

Wagner joined 28 other sheriffs from across the country for the training, according to NSI. He is the first sheriff of Adams County to graduate from the program.
