Service is often considered the most important of the four pillars of National Honor Society (NHS).
Service culminates the remaining three pillars (scholarship, leadership, and character) into actions that benefit both community members and students.
On Wednesday, May 18, a group from Lind-Ritzville High School’s NHS traveled with club advisor Kerry Murphy to Othello’s Adams County Pet Rescue (ACPR) headquarters. The opportunity allowed students to embrace the service pillar of NHS.
Many students enjoyed the experience of volunteering.
Honor society member Camden Smith explained, “My favorite part was just knowing that I was doing something positive for others.”
Lind-Ritzville NHS president Peyton Kiel added, “My favorite part of volunteering was the opportunity to help the animals and to see them so energetic and happy. I feel like the work I did helped keep the facility clean as well as keep all the animals healthy.”
Volunteers participated in various types of work at ACPR, including cleaning the facility, feeding animals, as well as walking and interacting with the animals.
Emily Rosen appreciated aspects of all of the jobs.
She explained, “My favorite part of volunteering at ACPR was getting to play with the animals and make them happy by playing with them or cleaning out their cages.”
Overall, volunteering helped students recognize the importance of service.
Kiel explained, “I believe that volunteering is important because it shows us that we can make a difference.”
“I think volunteering is an important part of Honor Society,” said Smith, “because you are representing your school and giving back to the community.”
Rosen continued, “We need to learn to give back to the community after all they’ve done for us...The communities support us in so many ways that community service should be something that everyone should do.”
“We should continue to volunteer whenever we can, all through our lives,” Kiel concluded.
