Robert J. Maier

Robert J. Maier was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Lind. Robert passed away March 16 at his home in Ritzville after a long battle with kidney disease. He was the son of Ben and Tillie Fritchle Maier and was the third of six children. He attended school at Lind and graduated from high school in 1945.

Upon graduation he enlisted in and served two years in the Navy. After he was discharged he returned to Lind and worked for his brother farming dry land wheat.

In 1949 he married Dorothy Geschke and moved to Ritzville and began working for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier and then postmaster. His employment with the postal service spanned 30 years.

After retirement he farmed with his son in the Packard area north of Ritzville. He and Dorothy enjoyed and spent many summers at Williams and Badger Lakes south of Cheney with family and friends. They also enjoyed vacationing in the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months.

He was very generous with his time, as a Boy Scout leader, little league baseball coach, volunteer fireman, Ritzville Lions Club member, Ritzville School Board member and Emanuel Lutheran Church Sunday School Superintendent. He also had a passion for his yard and his rosebushes. He was a true master gardener.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Floyd Maier and sister Mary Ann Borgens. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Eric and daughter-in-law Pamela Maier, Granddaughter Adriana and her husband Adrian Espindola and Grandson Zachary Maier, also by his sisters Bette Borth of Ritzville, Dorothy Austin of Umatilla, Oregon. and Clara Nelson of Spokane and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was an eternal optimist and always saw the positive side of things even during the most challenging of situations. He truly had a love of life. He had a strong faith and now is at peace. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him especially his family.

His memorial service was held at Emanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday, March 22, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church or one’s favorite charity. Condolences may be left at http://www.danekasfh.com.
