Evelyn Shields, 85, died on Jan. 11 at the East Adams Care Center in Ritzville. Evelyn was born in St. John, on June 10, 1930, to Peter and Mada Squires. She attended school in Pine City and graduated from Pine City High School in 1948.
She married her husband Henry Shields on Sept. 18, 1949, in Rosalia. They moved to a farm in Lamont, until they left the farm in 2010.
She and Henry were married 62 years until Henry’s death in 2011.
Evelyn was not only a farm wife, she was also active in her community. She was a 4-H leader, a Sunday school teacher at Lamont Community Church, a member of the Lamont Women’s Club and an active member of the Grange.
In the Grange she was a member of the Lamont and later Wheatland Granges. She served in the Whitman County Pomona Grange, was a State Grange Delegate and was the District Director for the Women’s Activities program for the South East District.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Henry, a daughter Kathleen Marie, sister Lucille and brothers Elmer, William, John, and Peter Jr. Her life is carried on by son Bruce (Cathy), daughters Sandy (Rick) Anderson and Jo, grand children Kim Anderson, Kristen (Ian) Hinton, Rob (Jillian) Shields and great grandchildren, Destini and Dayana Anderson and Kaelyn and Jacob Hinton.
Memorial donations in Evelyn’s name may be made to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Spokane or East Adams Care Center, 506 S Jackson, Ritzville, WA 99169.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Lamont Community Church, with David Rajala officiating. A dessert reception will follow at the Lamont Community Building.
