Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
After two years of working with the Othello detachment, Deputy Matt Roberson has transferred to the Ritzville detachment for the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
After growing up in Adams County in the Marlin area, Roberson returned to the county after he completed his service with the Army. Roberson has a strong military background, which eventually led him to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Roberson spent 17 years with the Army, mainly working as a mechanic and an engineer. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also completed a lot of active and reserve work.
After coming out of the Army, Roberson said he could return to the ranch and help with the stock, or he could pursue another career. He wanted to return to Adams County and made the decision to join law enforcement.
Roberson made the decision to transfer to Ritzville in an effort to be closer to his home and to make the effort to protect and serve in the area of the county where he resides.
He lives in the northern portion of Adams County with his wife and children, who attend the Wilson Creek Schools.
Since beginning his work in law enforcement, Roberson said it is something he had truly come to enjoy. He said in a serious role as an officer of the law, it is crucial to compartmentalize and have fun with the job.
“If you don’t have fun, it’ll eat you up. You have to enjoy the different calls; nobody calls you on their best day, they call you on their worst,” Roberson said. “You have to be able to go to those calls and take the challenges.”
Roberson said working in rural Adams County has been a better fit for him because he enjoys the opportunity to work with the people he considers his neighbors and with a lifestyle he is accustomed to.
During his first months with the Ritzville detachment, Roberson said the majority of his calls revolved around poaching and trespassing calls, because of hunting season. The calls in the outlying districts help Roberson familiarize himself with the entire district.
Roberson said the best part about transitioning to the Ritzville detachment is being closer to his family and being able to protect the district where his children are growing up.
He added another positive aspect is he knows all of the deputies and the transition has been made easy since he has been able to continue working with them.
