Animal House uses Adams County Pet Rescue as introductory episode

Animal House is a new series in which a group of animal advocates go to a struggling community to renovate or build animal shelters.

Adams County Pet Rescue was chosen to be the very first shelter that Animal House came to assist.

More than five years ago the Adams County shelter burned down, the staff was able to get all of the animals out safely. The animals were then transferred to the city pound where temporary shelters were set up.

The Animal House team along with a group of volunteers, were able to assist in the building of the new facility with the help of Alex Kaylor from Saddle Mt Homes.

The community of Othello, and surrounding areas, were able to come together to gather volunteers and materials to get the shelter built.

Levi Dean from Spokane Mobile Dog Grooming came to groom some of the animals from the shelter to help make the dogs look their best for adoption.

The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon also stepped in to help with the feral cat population in the Othello area.

Miguel Abi Hassan the Community Outreach Specialist with Animal House took it upon himself to meet with community leaders to promote the shelter and gave some advice on how to take advantage of the opportunities the shelter provides.

Hassan promoted the specific educational benefits that a shelter can provide.

Hassan stated, “a lot of folks a liken shelters as an anchor for good in their communities and that’s exactly what we’re creating, a really big anchor of humanity right here in Othello.”

The members of Animal House visited the Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, which is a medium security prison that has a dog behavior program located in Connell.

The Adams County Pet Rescue group takes shelter dogs into the prison to help the dogs become more adoptable through training classes with inmates.

The Adams County Commissioners, Roger Hartwig, John Marshall and Jeff Stevens visited the building site to thank Animal House for their assistance and to provide $5,000 to help the team with their undertaking.

The Othello Master Gardeners Society also came out to assist in beautifying the site with donations from a local plant nursery.

The group also welcomed a sizable donation of insulation, sheet rock and other products from Home Depot, as well as a group of employees to come assist in the finishing of the construction.

DeWils Fine Cabinetry donated the cabinets for the new building and Tractor Supply Co. donated the fencing for the grounds as well.

There was an unbelievable amount of volunteers and donations that came pouring in to help out Animal House in building from the ashes of the previous shelter.
