The Lady Tigercats are in the swing of competition after battling against
Garfield-Palouse in the first league match of the season, followed by competitive play at the Freeman Tournament.
The LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus team hosted Gar-Pal in Washtucna in a hard-fought contest for the win. After five close and competitive sets, the Lady Tigercats fell to Gar-Pal with scores of 25-22, 20-25, 28-30, 22-25.
Head Coach Sandy Martin said the match easily could have gone either way, but the LWK team had a solid game. As a team, the Lady Tigercats served 90 percent during the match.
Jazzmyn Gordon led the team with seven kills, 19 digs and one block. Britte Harder served 16 for 16, had six kills and four blocks. Nicole Harder added five aces for the Lady Tigercats.
“We will continually work on serving tough and being more accurate with placing our serves,” Martin said. “From that match we decided we needed to work more on blocking, i.e. reading the hitter, and work on defensive positions and responsibilities. Overall I thought we did a good job.”
The Lady Tigercats traveled to the Freeman Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, and played against four teams. Due to the Palouse Empire Fair, the Lady Tigercats were missing three starting varsity athletes.
The LWK team started the tournament playing Northwest Christian, where they suffered a 7-25, 11-25 loss.
They moved on to play Freeman’s junior varsity squad, and while they pushed the match to three sets, they faced their second loss of the day: 24-26 27-26, 9-15.
The Lady Tigercats played Wilbur-Creston and lost in two sets, 15-25 and 12-25. They ended the day playing Liberty, facing another defeat 12-25, 15-25.
Gordon had a solid day for the team and racked up 20 kills and eight blocks. Jessica Guske led the Lady Tigercats from the serving line and had a good passing day.
Martin said she moved Jadyn Guske to the middle position, while rotating Autumn Meyers to an outside hitter position. Meyers moved up from junior varsity for the day and led the Lady Tigercats in digs with 12.
Kristen Miller moved into one of the setter positions for the team and served 100 percent during the tournament.
“To be competitive in our league, we will have to be aggressive at all times,” Martin said about the team’s key success this season. “We won’t get away with ‘just getting the ball over.’”
The Lady Tigercats match up with Colton on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Washtucna at 6 p.m. The team travels to Palouse on Saturday to compete in the Garfield-Palouse Tournament.
