Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
Rachel Plager has joined The Ritzville Journal staff in the full-time reporter position, beginning Aug. 31.
Plager, born and raised in Spokane, has always had an interest in living in a small town, and when the job opportunity presented itself, she knew it could be a good fit for her.
Her parents Boyd and Jill Plager are both originally from the area and they graduated from Lind High School.
Plager has multiple family members still residing in the Ritzville community and surrounding areas, and she is excited to have an opportunity to be closer to her extended family and still only an hour from her immediate family.
After graduating from North Central High School, Plager attended Western Washington University in Bellingham. She earned her Bachelor’s in English, and immediately began work at People to People following her graduation.
She began her work for the organization as a member of the health and safety team, and quickly worked her way up to work on a team in the communications department of the organization.
Her final promotion within the company allowed her to work as the Area Event Coordinator, where she had an opportunity to utilize her editing skills.
After People to People began closing its doors last month, Plager found herself searching for jobs where she could utilize her skill set.
Editing and reading have always been a passion for Plager, and majoring in English was a natural fit. She is looking forward to bringing her expertise to The Journal, while also developing her skills in areas like writing and photography.
The diversity in job responsibilities also attracted Plager to the position as reporter, as she enjoys multitasking and being challenged in her job. She enjoys working in jobs that are not monotonous, and provide her with a new experience everyday.
Plager said she is eager to delve into her responsibilities with the newspaper and start developing connections in the county.
She explained being a part of a community is important to her, and moving to Ritzville allows her to start finding her role in the community.
Plager’s responsibilities at The Journal include covering public events, sports, government meetings and producing feature stories.
She will also be working as one of the staff photographers for events.
