The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos ran past St. George’s girl’s team to win the 2015 2B State Champions title.
The LRS girls won the state meet at Eastern Washington University with 74 points, narrowly defeating St. George’s with 71 points.
The Lady Broncos’ success began early in the state contest when Tracy Melville outran her competition to claim the state title in the 3200-meter race on Thursday.
Melville controlled the pace of the field of athletes, and won the race with a three-second difference between her and the second place finisher.
On Friday, three Broncos competed in field events while the remainder of the team raced in the preliminary heats to qualify for finals the following day. The top eight runners in each race earned the right to compete on Saturday.
Heidi Hennings started the day tying her personal record in the pole vault. After vaulting 10-feet, Hennings earned third and a place on the podium.
Kallie Harder ended her sophomore season on a high note when she threw her personal best record of 110 feet, 10 inches in the discus. Her personal record setting throw landed her in fifth place in state.
Alan Field also set a personal record in the long jump when he beat his previous record by four inches. The jump landed him in sixth place on the podium.
On Saturday, the Broncos runners took center stage and the girl’s ran to the state title. One field event athlete competed for the Broncos as well.
In the second event at the meet, the Lady Broncos 4x200-meter relay team proved their dominance against the competition as they ran to a first place finish, defeating their competition by three seconds.
The team of Holly Nygren, Rachel Schell, Samantha Asmussen and Kate Schell remained undefeated in the race all season.
The 4x100-meter relay team followed suit as they ran to a state title only hours later. The team of Nygren, R. Schell, K. Schell and Felicia Ziemer earned the top spot on the podium with a half second win over the second place team from LaConner.
Individually, Kate Schell earned a fourth place finish in the 100-meter race and a third place finish in the 200-meter race.
Rachel Schell finished seventh overall in the 100-meter.
Ziemer earned a third place medal when she ran her personal best time in the 800-meter. Melville earned a fifth place finish in the same event.
Melville also competed in the 1600-meter, where she earned a third place finish for the Broncos.
On the boys’ side, Peyton Kiel earned a seventh place finish in the pole vault contest.
The day concluded with the 4x400-meter relay race. The Lady Broncos had the fastest time in prelims the day prior, and ended the meet with a fourth place finish.
