The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos’ basketball team earned the title of 2B Academic State Champions for girl’s basketball with an accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.85 during the season.
Out of all the academic state champions statewide in all categories, the team recorded the fourth highest GPA in the state.
The Dairy Farmers of Washington, Les Schwab Tires and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced the 2015 Winter Team Academic State Champions last week for cheerleading, forensics, orchestra, choir, band, girls bowling, gymnastics, boys swimming and diving, boys and girls wrestling, boys and girls basketball and dance/drill.
The award program was created not only to recognize and reward teams that maintained the highest GPA in their sport and classification, but also to acknowledge the teams with GPAs over 3.0.
If a team averages a 3.0-3.49 GPA they qualify for the Distinguished Team Award, while a team with a GPA between 3.50-4.00 receives the Outstanding Team Award.
Schools that win the Academic State Championship also receive points toward their pursuit of the WIAA/National Guard Scholastic Cup, the most prestigious WIAA award given to each school with the best finish in their respective classifications based on athletic competition, academic performance and sportsmanship.
Academic State Champion Teams will be invited to attend the State Championship of their sport where they will be honored.
