Broncos wrestlers compete in sub-regional tournament

Of the eight members of the Broncos mat squad only two are slated to move on into the sub-regionals tournament, as alternates.

The rest of the Brronco squad was eliminated during the District 7/9 Sub-Regional Tournament held in Ritzville on Feb. 8 and 9.

Josh Rosman started his tournament competition on Friday night wrestling at 120 pounds against Tristan Chantry from Selkirk. Rosman lost his first match and then wrestled on Saturday against Joey Rodgers of Garfield-Palouse. With a win, he moved on to his next bout against Gunner Hilderbrandt from Republic.

Rosman lost and then matched up against Kyle DeGon from Liberty for fifth place and a chance at the alternate seed into the sub-regional tournament. Rosman was injured in this final bout and took sixth place in his division.

Matthias Ferderer also started his tournament competition on Friday evening, against Danny Phillips from Republic in the 134-pound division. After losing his first match, Ferderer advanced over Adrien Hendrix of Davenport when he forfeited.

He then squared-off with Will Dituri from Tri-Cities Prep whom he beat by default, 5-2. His next opponent was Vince Fowler of the Liberty wrestling squad. Ferderer lost by pin in the third round.

In his final match, Ferderer faced Chris Jones of Columbia-Burbank. Jones pinned Ferderer in the third round and he took sixth place in his division.

Micheal Wheeler wrestled twice on Friday night, first facing David Just from Waitsburg-Prescott. Just pinned Wheeler in the third round. He then met Jared Owens from Kettle Falls on the mat. Owens took the bout by default, 6-0 over Wheeler.

Karl Hawks faced Brian DeYoung from the Columbia-Burbank for his first bout. After losing by pin, he was matched against Josh Seaman-Cwik from Northwest Christian whom he defeated by pin.

Hawks then wrestled Jake Harrington from Liberty for a chance in the bout for third and fourth place but Harrington pinned him.

His final opponent, Cole Sailor of Republic, forfeited the match and Hawks took fifth place in the 195-pound division.

Matt Vercoe started his tournament competition wrestling against Joey Dickenson from the Selkirk team. Vercoe lost by pin in the first round.

He then met Nick McAdams from Columbia-Burbank and was pinned in the second round before facing Hunter Dawley of Reardan for fifth place in the 220-pound division. Dawley pinned Vercoe in the second round and he took sixth place at the tournament.

Two LRS wrestlers competed in the 285-pound division at the tournament. Grayson Whitaker lost to his first opponent, Trevor Morris from Davenport, by pin. Whitaker went on to pin Tyler Hoffman from Waitsburg-Prescott in the first round before being pinned by Cody Perryman from Kettle Falls.

Alexis Guizar lost by pin to Perryman from the Kettle Falls wrestling team in his first bout.

Guizar pinned Simon Williams of Northwest Christian in the first round of his second match. Morris defeated Guizar by default, 3-1, in the third round.

Guizar and Whitaker then squared off for fifth place in their division and Whitaker pinned his teammate in 31 seconds.

Hawks and Whitaker serve as alternates in the regional tournament if the top four in their weight class cannot compete.
