The LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus Lady Tigercats began the basketball season with a pair of weekend games. The Lady Tigercats faced off against Touchet on Dec. 12, before hosting Colton on Dec. 20.
In the non-league game against the Lady Indians, the Lady Tigercats struggled to put up points against the aggressive team. Touchet handed the Lady T-cats the first loss of the season, with a final score of 76-24.
Eighth grade athlete Alynn Harder stepped into the starting point guard role for the Lady Tigercats in the absence of Nicole Harder. She stepped up to lead the team offensively, and scored six points in the game.
The Lady Tigercats had difficulty containing Touchet athlete Cierra Jo McKeown, who scored 37 points for the Lady Indians. McKeown’s efforts alone made it impossible for the LWK team to close the scoring gap.
Jazzmyn Gordon led the Lady Tigercats in scoring with nine points, while Jazlynn Webb added seven. Brittany Gordon had two points.
With a young team and without any seniors, Head Coach Trisha Bennett knew this season would be a rebuilding year for the Lady Tigercats.
The early games help fine tune skills and allow the athletes to adjust to varsity competition.
On Saturday night, the defending state champions the Colton Wildcats displayed why they are the favored team to win the league. The Tigercats were handed a 4-83 loss by Colton.
The Lady Tigercats started out well, taking time on offense to get the play started and having constant ball movement, but the Lady Wildcats proved to be strong shooters on the opposite end of the court.
The Colton team put up 18 three-point shots in the first half and sank seven of them.
Colton held the Lady Tigercats scoreless in three quarters on Saturday night, with the four points being scored by Jazzmyn Gordon in the second quarter.
Turnovers also plagued the Lady Tigercats team, but they also recovered and forced steals against Colton.
Towards the end of the game, the Lady T-cats struggled to maintain the high energy levels they had started with.
While Colton had a deep bench to turn to, the Lady Tigercats only had seven athletes suited up for the varsity game. Nicole Harder returns to play this week, and will serve as a starter for LWK.
The Lady Tigercats host St. John-Endicott in LaCrosse at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, before traveling to Liberty Christian on Dec. 20.
