Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
In response to Randy Flyckt’s letter in the September 25th Ritzville Journal, I thought I caught a whiff of ageism. It seems antiquated to equate job performance with age anymore. Some might call it age discrimination. To imply that Judge Hille would best be served by retiring says less about her than it does about Mr. Flyckt. It lets the public know that a career of 23 years is maybe too much, in his opinion. In most careers 23 years is about 2/3 of the way. Most of us toil at our jobs for 38 to 42 years…and many of his own constituents are still toiling in the “trenches.” Many of our local farmers are an example.
However, opinions are free in this country and at some point Mr. Flyckt will be up for a contested re election campaign too. It is good that his constituents know beforehand how he feels about the magic age of 65.
Following is a list of the current Supreme Court Justices and their current ages.
Antonin Scalia, 78 years and 6 months; Anthony Kennedy, 78 years and 2 months; Clarence Thomas, 66 years and 3 months; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 81 years and 6 months; Stephan Breyer, 76 years and 1 month; John G. Roberts, 59 years and 7 months; Samuel A. Alito, Jr., 64 years and 5 months; Sonia Sotomayor, 60 years and 2 months; Elena Kagen, 54 years and 4 months.
According to Mr. Flyckt’s calculations, 5 members and soon to be Samuel Alito should be getting their walking papers.
In response to the statement that a practiced attorney makes a better judge. Google it. There are just as many opinions stating that attorneys make the worst judges as well as the best. Google is just full of unsubstantiated garbage for and against this issue. This is a meaningless argument with no proof. Mrs. Benzel is lucky to have My. Flyckt as an unofficial campaign manager. His fervor and passion for his candidate are evident. However if she wins this election, Adams County’s future cases will be heard by a judge who worked for him. I think I’d rather have a judge that remains professionally distant from the attorneys that represent cases in that courtroom. I would want decisions made by our judge to be impartial and not influenced by past political connections or favors. As a result, I’m casting my vote for Judge Adalia Hille.
