Horse Department
Rhonda Schafer served as the superintendent of the Horse Department in charge of 40 4-H entries, eight FFA entries, 45 open youth, and 45 adult entries.
Awards in the 4-H division: Rachel Schell fitting and showing grand champion, Rachel Nygren fitting and showing reserve. Rachel Schell hgh ipoint performance champion, and Erika Leffel reserve hipoint performance.
In the FFA division: Peyton Curtis fitting and showing grand champion, Brianna Kin Kade reserve. Peyton Curtis hipoint performance grand champion Brianna Kenkade reserve. Peyton Curtis also won the Elizabeth Hennings Traveling Trophy.
Beef Department
Andy Williams along with Randy and Debbie Kulm were the superintendents of the Beef Department with nine 4-H entries, 16 FFA entries and nine open youth entries this year.
Awards in the 4-H division include Augustus Tracy with the Grand Champion Market Beef with Eliza Galbreath reserve. Tara Tellefson received Grand Champion in showmanship and Colby Tracy took reserve.
In the FFA entries TyAnn Tellefson had the Grand Champion Market steer, Taylor Kulm reserve. In showmanship TyAnn Tellefson took grand champion with Taylor Kulm reserve. TyAnn Tellefson also had the Grand Champion prospect steer and Taylor Kulm reserve.
In the open youth entries TyAnn Tellefson took Grand Champion for her cow/calf pair and Tara Tellefson took reserve. Alyssa Williams received Grand and Reserve champion for her junior heifer entries.
Dairy Department
Andy Williams, Randy Kulm and Debbie Kulm were also the superintendents of the Dairy Department, which had one open youth entry.
Jaden Wilks took Grand Champion with his junior Jersey heifer.
Swine Department
Brad Gering supervised 18 4-H, 29 FFA and two open youth entries as the superintendent of the Swine Department.
Awards in the 4-H division were: Wade Schafer with the Grand Champion market hog, Grace Greenwalt reserve. In fitting and showing Wade Schafer was awarded Grand Champion and Thomas Rosen reserve.
In the FFA division Micheal Shields had the Grand and Reserve Champion market hogs. In fitting and showing Bryce Kelly took Grand Champion and Abby Gering reserve.
In the open youth division Jayce Kelly had the Grand Champion market hog and Brenick Esser reserve. Brenick Esser would take Grand Champion in the fitting and showing competition with Jayce Kelly taking reserve.
Sheep, Goat Department
Lisa Tellefson over saw five 4-H entries and 13 FFA sheep entries at the fair this year; she also was in charge of six 4-H, six FFA and three open youth goat entries.
Sheep Awards:
In the 4-H division Brynne Nelson had the Grand and Reserve Champion market lambs. Merlee Liberty took Grand Champion in fitting and showing and Caden Liberty reserve.
In FFA Erica Leffel had the Grand and Reserve Champion market lambs. Nathan Naught received Grand Champion in the fitting and showing competition, Britte Harder reserve.
Goat Awards:
In the 4-H division Thomas Rosen had the Grand Champion market goat and Bailey Dennis had the reserve. Caden Liberty took Grand Champion in fitting and showing, Thomas Rosen reserve.
In the FFA division Nathan Naught had the grand Champion market goat and Brianna Kin Kade the reserve. Nathan Naught also took Grand Champion in the fitting and showing with David Ziebell taking reserve.
Poultry, Rabbit Department
Janet Manke was in charge of 36 4-H, 12 open youth and six adult entries as the superintendent of the Poultry and Rabbit Department.
Awards were given to Amy Anderson for the Grand Champion market rabbit and Katie Manke for the reserve. Vanessa Kealey was the Grand Champion of the rabbit fitting and showing competition with Katie Manke taking reserve. Katie Manke also won the Best of Breed award.
Emma Dennis received a Best of Show award for her chicken. Vanessa Keeley and Henry McRae received the Best of Breed award for their chickens. Merit McRae received a Special Merit award for his eggs entry.
Field Crops
Susan Schafer served as the superintendent of the Field Crops Department overseeing two FFA, 32 open youth and 41 adult entries.
Melanie Spivey won $5 for her youth amber waves entry; Linda Riemer received Best of Show and $10 and Bessie Allen received $7 for their amber waves entries. Tessa Jantz $20 for her Jar, Loaf and Flour entry, Donna Koch received $18 for her entry and Bessie Allen won $7.
Lori Williams received $20 for her Jar and Loaf entry and Donna Koch received $18. Melanie Spivey received $20 for her first place junior entry Jar and Loaf. TanAn Hollenbeck took second place and was awarded $18 and Tessa Jantz took third, receiving $16.
Fritz and James Coon tied for first place in Alfalfa Hay King and Catie Coon took first place in Alfalfa Hay Queen.
Fruits and Vegetables
Trish McRae over saw the Fruits and Vegetables Department, which had 75 open youth entries and 110 adult entries this year.
Douglas Olson Best of Show with his peaches. Karin Clinesmith received Best of Class for her vegetable plate. Megan Melcher also received a best in class award for her Creature Feature entry “Callie the Caterpillar”. Macy Schoesler received a special merit award for the 10.8-pound squash. Other Special Merit recipients were Beth North for her purple potato, Karyn Allen for her kohlrabi, Stacy Dewald for her 41.6-pound field pumpkin and Alexis Melcher for her kraut cabbage. Alexis Melcher also received the superintendants award for best all-around entries in the youth department.
Plants and Flowers
Karyn Allen was the superintendent for the Plants and Flowers, which had 94 total entries, 15 open youth and 79 adult.
Karyn Allen received a $20 gift certificate to Uniquely Washington for her Ornamental Sunflower, which received the Best of Sunflower award for adult entries. Rachel Nygren Received Best of Sunflowers in the youth entries and a $20 gift certificate to Memories Diner.
Jim Tate received $10 from Progressive Club for his Gladiolus, which received Best of Class (A). Tessa Jantz received best of Class (A) for her Tea Rose and $5 from Progressive Club. Joan Kison received Best of Class (B) and a $15 gift certificate to Java Bloom for her Kitchen Creation. Marie Gettmann received a decorative pot and Best of Class (C) for her Orchid.
Best of Show in the adult entries went to Vernon Wagnor for his Gladiolus who also received a $20 gift certificate to Cow Creek Mercantile. Hayden Melcher received Best of Show for his Geranium and a $20 gift certificate to Sunny Spot Floral and Gifts.
Food Preservation
Lori Williams and Stacey Dewald served as superintendents for the Canned Foods Department in which there were 16 youth and 96 adult entries.
In the youth division Hayden Melcher received a Special Merit award for his dill pickles. For her raspberry jam Megan Melcher also received a Special Merit award. Emma Hein received Best of Class for her apple jelly and Best of Show for her dill pickles.
Best of Class award winners in the adult division went to Alice Weber for her Bing cherries, Karen Okerlund for her apricot jam, Pat Evans for her rhubarb sauce, Scott Hollenbeck for his Coke relish and Lori Spivey for her dill pickles.
Special Merit awards went to Karen Okerlund for her sweet cherries, Trish McRae for her garlic and pepper sauerkraut and fruit leather entries, Alice Weber for her Anaheim Chilies and Chris Johnson for his canned fish.
Best of Show was awarded to Karen Okerlund’s pickled asparagus entry.
Baking
Kim Schofstoll and Ashley Dew served as superintendents of the Baking Department, which had 14 youth and 27 adult entries.
The Baking Queen award was presented to Lori Williams who had four entries, she received $20 from the Adams County Association of Wheat Growers. Williams also received Best of Show and a cookbook from the Washington Association of Wheat Growers for her maple oat scones.
Best of Class winners in the adult division included Jan Collard for her angel food cake, Stephanie Collard for her pumpkin praline bread, Lisa Peterson for her Famous Amos sourdough bread and Karin Clinesmith for her raspberry pie.
In the youth division Holly Murphy received Best of Show for her lemon blueberry bread along with a Wheat Magic cookbook from the WAWG.
Peyton Curtis received Best of Class for her lemon crinkle cookies; Hannah Towne also received Best of Class for her baking powder biscuits.
Machine Stitching
Jan Collard was the superintendant of the Machine Stitching Department with five open youth entries and 58 adult entries.
In the youth division Mya Adams received Best of Class for her pillow doll dress. Gus Tracy received a Special Merit Award for his shotgun shell pillow.
In the adult division Donna Koch received Best of Show for her table runner entry.
Best of Class awards went to Marge Schoessler for her towel and dishcloth, Jorene Zumdahl for her wall hanging and Beth North for her wall hanging.
Special merit award recipients included Yvonne Anderson for her bag, Sandra Atkinson for her runner and Joanne Underberg for her table runner.
Clothing
Jan Collard served as the superintendent of the Clothing Department, which had nine entries
Donna Koch received Best of Class and Best of Show for her unlined jacket entry. She also received Best of Class for her apron entry and a Special Merit award for her bathrobe entry. Beth North received Best of Class for her prom dress entry and a Special Merit award for her lined vest entry.
Handiwork
Morgane Roth held the position of superintendent of the Handiwork Department at this year’s fair, which had three open youth entries and 55 adult entries.
Jeni Wyma received the Best of Show award for her eagle cross-stitch entry.
Best of Class was awarded to Jennifer Saunders for her fingerless mittens and to Shirley Roth for her flag afghan.
Jody Nave’s large knitted afghan, Donna Koch’s cross-stitch picture and Marge Schoessler’s sun bonnet she doll all received Special Merit awards as well.
Quilts
Beverly Cobb served as the superintendent for the Quilt Department in which there were two open youth entries and 86 adult entries this year.
Beth North received Best of Show and a $50 award from Peace by Piece Quilt Guild.
Yvonne Anderson was awarded the Washington State Quilter’s first place ribbon and $20 from the Washington State Quilters Guild of Spokane. Second and third place ribbons were awarded to Sandi Atkinson and Claudia Graham.
Best of Class awards were received by: Alice Koch, Yvonne Anderson, Claudia Graham, Sandi Atkinson, JoRene Zumdahl, Beth North and Donna Koch.
The People’s Choice Award was presented to Beverly Cobb who also received $20 from Ritzville Hardware.
In the youth department Kylie Frick was awarded Best of Show, Best of Class and $20 by the Peace by Piece Quilt Guild for her “Cherries” entry.
Holly Murphy was awarded a Special Merit ribbon for her “Squares and Dolphins” entry.
Spinning and Weaving
Marie Gettman and Janice Dennis coordinated the Spinning and Weaving Department, which had 27 adult entries.
Susan Schmieman received Best of Show and Best of Class for her woven wool rug.
Best of Class was also awarded to Rebecca Harkins and Karen Dodson.
Special Merit recipients include Susan Schmieman for her woven wall hanging, Pat Evans for her hand-spun wool skein, Linda Kubik for her hand-woven jacket, Karen Dodson for her hand-spun wool skein entry and Connie Schlosser for her hand-woven vest.
Photography
Randy and Shirley Roth served jointly as the superintendents for the Photography Department with 19 youth entries and 76 adult entries.
Debbie Arlt received Best of Show with Tracey Koethus, Vanessa Keeley and Katlyn McBride receiving Best of Class awards.
4-H Still Life
Richard and Janette Hollenback and Carla Jerue served as superintendents for the 4-H Still Life Department with 479 entries.
Caleb Graham was awarded the Senior Still Life award; TanAn Hollenback received the Intermediate Still Life award; Alysai Phelps the Junior Still Life award and Melanie Spivey was the recipient of the Primary Still Life Award. Jess Ford of Pullman sponsored the Still Life awards at this year’s fair.
TanAn Hollenback received the Washington Wheat Association first place award and Emma Hulett received the second place award.
TanAn also received the Wheat King first place award sponsored by the Adams County Wheat Growers Association. Emma Hulett received the Wheat Queen second place award.
Caleb Graham received the Senior Creative Arts Award sponsored by B and B hobbies of Spokane. TanAn Hollenback received the intermediate, Alysia Phelps the junior and LienHoa Hollenback the primary awards as well.
Emma Hulett and TanAn Hollenback received photography awards sponsored by Larsen’s Photography.
TanAn Hollenback received Best of Show awards for her dried mangos, hooded cloak, elephant ears, bird feeder and her hairy photo entries. She also received Best of Class awards for her pickled wax beans and shotgun shell lights as well as Special Merit ribbons for her bird feeder, shotgun shell lights, dragon scale cuff bracelet and CD coaster entries.
LienHoa Hollenback received Special Merit ribbons for her dilly beans, drindl skirt, pillowcase dress, doll’s pillow case dress, patchwork Scotty dog, napkin holder, fabric covered egg, bird house, creative art shirt and her woven yarn basket entries. In addition to these she also received two Special Merit ribbons for her photography entries.
Melanie Spivey received special merit for her dried soup mix, drindl skirt and kit helicopter entries. She also received Special Merit ribbons in photography for seven of her photo entries.
Emma Hulett was awarded Best of Class for her banana bread and hedgehog entries. She also received Best of Show for her sunset photo entry and Special Merit ribbons for her hedgehog and cork tree entries.
Lucas Sitton received three Special Merit ribbons in photography as well.
4-H Still Life Activities
Richard and Janette Hollenback and Carla Jerue also oversaw the 4-H Still Life Activities Department, which had 15 total entrants.
In the Catapult contest Melanie Spivey took first place in the one to seven-year-old age group, Lren Hollenbeck took second.
In the eight to 12-year-old division Lucas Sitton received first place and Aubree Sitton second.
In the 13 to 18-year-old age bracket TanAn Hollenback received first place.
Model Kits
Paul McAnally was the superintendent for the Model Kits Department with 46 open youth entries and one adult entry.
Morgan Brausen received Best of Show for his entry “The Screamer.” Henry McRae was awarded Best of Class for his entry.
Special Merit ribbon recipients were Merit McRae, JP McAnally, Megan Melcher and Brock Tracy.
Woodworking
The Woodworking Department had one FFA entry, nine open youth entries and five adult entries. Dwight Olson served as the department superintendent.
Byron Fitch received Best of Show for his 13 lathe turned bowls and Warren Kragt was awarded Best of Class for his wedding sign entry.
