Alice (Motley) Phillips

Alice Elizabeth (Motley) Phillips died at her home in Lind on August 16 at the age of 97.

She was born February 25, 1917 to William and Mina (Shining) Motley at the family farm located between Cunningham and Othello. Alice grew up in Lind and attended Lind High School, graduating in 1935.

In 1937 she married her high school sweetheart, Chester Phillips, in Spokane. She worked at Kasper’s store in Lind as a clerk, selling dry goods, food, meats and a little bit of everything else. Together they farmed in the Lind area, raising chickens and cows, along with wheat crops. She enjoyed embroidery, sewing, preserving fruit, yard work and belonged to the Homemakers Club. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. Everyone was welcome in her home.

Together, she and Chet farmed until 1977 when he passed away due to a farm accident. Alice then took over managing the farm, too.

She is survived by one daughter, Bernadine Reid and one son, Clark Phillips; two grandchildren, Ryan Reid and Amy Reid and three great-grandchildren, Emma Schrenk, Amanda and Abigail Reid. Alice was a loving and generous aunt to her nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Walt and Art Motley, and sisters Winnifred Haggerty, Mildred Rinker and Mina Meilke.

Graveside services were held September 3 at 1 p.m. at the Lind Cemetery. Pastor Mary Daniels officiated.

The family suggests memorials in her honor be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Neptune Society of Spokane was entrusted with the arrangements.
