Marshmallow catapult contest offered at the fair

The Marshmallow Catapult Contest sponsored by the McGregor Company of Lind, Ritzville and Washtucna returns to the Wheat Land Communities’ Fair this year.

Contestants are required to build a swing arm catapult that can launch a regular-sized marshmallow. Four age categories have been designated to the contest beginning with under 8-years-old; 8 to 13-years-old; 14-18-years-old and 18 and older.

The contest rules are as follows:

Contestants may use more than one type of material. The footprint of the device is no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches. Contestants cannot use motors to power the unit. Contestants under the age of eight may use a kit to construct their catapult. Catapults must be exhibited in the fair in open youth, 4-H, FFA or adult divisions. Entries cannot be previously entered in the fair. Contest entries can not be a Trebuchet. Catapults will be released to each participant prior to the contest.

There will be prizes awarded for the top three catapults in each age group.

The contest is scheduled to take place Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. near the amphitheatre. For fair exhibitor information refer to the 2014 Exhibitors’ Guide located at the Ritzville Journal office, Ritzville City Hall, Lind Town Hall and the Ritzville Visitors’ Center.
