LWK softball battles Colton, Rosalia

till working to rack up the first win for the season, but the team is measuring each game not by the win-loss column, but instead by the improvements made on the field.

The Lady Tigercats played two games last week, first against Colton on April 23 and then against Rosalia on April 26.

Head coach Bailey Weekes said the game against Colton tested not only the team’s improvements, but also their ability to play through inclement weather conditions.

Weekes said it was the first game the team had to play in rain, and it tested the team’s ability to step up their game and continue to play at the level they did in fair weather.

The Lady Tigercats were short a few team members and rotated athletes into new roles for the Colton game. The LWK lost game one, 0-17, and game two, 0-20.

In the first game, LWK struggled to get athletes on base, while in the second game the team was able to fix their timing and adjust to the pitcher. Nicole Harder led the team offensively, getting hits during her two times up to bat and earning a base hit on her second.

Kristen Miller earned two base hits during the first two games.

Defensively, Britte Harder pitched the first game and Hailey Ayers took the mound in the second.

Kadie Whinery made two plays at third in the first inning, throwing two girls out.

The other out in the game from a fly ball catch in the outfield by Abby McGregor. In the second game, Jazlynn Webb made two plays at shortstop by throwing two girls out.

The Lady Tigercats took the field against Rosalia on Saturday and Weekes said that as a team, the girls played amazing and showed tremendous improvements.

“After both games, I was so excited for my girls and their accomplishments that if it wasn’t for the score I (or anyone around me) would have honestly thought we won! It was a fun day for LWK softball,” Weekes said.

The girls fell to Rosalia, 1-17 and 6-16, but putting runs on the board and holding Rosalia to no runs in the third inning of the second game were highlights for the team.

Webb earned her first triple of the season and an RBI during the first game.

In the second game in the third inning, the team had three up, three down.

Ayers pitched both games and had a total of five strikeouts in the first game, and three strikeouts in the second game.

“We were really able to help our pitcher out by making good plays in both the infield and outfield! We gave up some runs in the beginning of the game (first couple of innings) but by the end of both games we were able to hold up their runners from scoring,” Weekes said.

“We will continue to work on situations in practice so the girls will be able to feel comfortable making decisions on the field as a team.

“They have come so far and I can’t say enough how proud I am of my team!”
