LRS Broncos’ tennis concludes league against LWK

The LRS Broncos and LWK Tigercats matched up in the final league match of the season for the Broncos on Saturday, April 26, in Washtucna.

Due to rescheduling, the Tigercats had a double-header match remaining to conclude league play on April 29.

In the Saturday match, the LRS team won with the girls team earning a 5-0 win, while the LRS boys earned a 3-2 win. The majority of the matches of the day were won by forfeit, due to reduced numbers for the LWK team.

Tracy Melville continued her undefeated season by defeating Lura Potter 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. The rest of the LRS girls’ wins were by forfeit in favor of No. 2 singles athlete Carissa Peavey, No. 3 singles Cassie Ewing, the No. 1 doubles team of Elizabeth Schofstoll and Kymberlee Webb, and the No. 2 doubles team of Soraida Chavez and Emily Boutain.

Travis Ste. Marie earned the first win of the day for the Bronco boys with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Logan Miller in the No. 1 singles match. LWK athlete Levi Allen won the No. 2 singles by forfeit, as did Tigercat Garrett Correll in the No. 3 singles.

The Broncos’ No. 1 doubles team of Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday won the match by forfeit, while Josh Yow and Zeth Swinger earned the No. 2 doubles win, also by forfeit.

Since the Tigercats were low in numbers, the teams played a couple of pro-sets for experience. Canaday beat Allen 8-1 in pro-set, and Michael Wheeler earned an 8-6 pro-set win over Correll.

With the league season concluding for the Broncos, the girls finish the season 5-1, with the only loss being to Reardan. The boys end the season with a 4-2 record, after suffering losses to St. George’s and Davenport.

Melville remains undefeated going into districts, and Alex Wheeler and Canaday have only had one loss this season. Head coach Liz Melville said the sole loss was in a three-set match against St. George’s.

The teams head to districts on May 10 and May 13, with four boys singles and doubles, and four girls singles and doubles, qualifying for districts.
