After the tragic landslide in Oso earlier this year, a group of local women banded together to use their talents to help residents of the area affected by the landslide.
The women of the Peace by Piece Quilt Guild have been busy making supplies and donations to send to the area to supply the individuals affected by the tragedy with some comfort.
Bev Cobb is credited with putting the idea in motion, as she knew individuals located in the Darrington area. Many years ago, the Darrington traveled to Ritzville to participate in a volleyball tournament and it was during this time that Cobb met the team’s coach.
Cobb organized the donations with the quilt guild and found volunteers willing to transport the donations to the coach in Darrington. She took the donations on the first leg of the journey on April 25 and they are expected to arrive in Darrington this week.
Over the course of the past month, members of the quilt guild have donated a large variety of items to Cobb to give to the individuals on the west side of the state. The group members sewed on the quilts, identifying they were made by the Peace by Piece Quilt Guild in Ritzville.
The amount of donations collected in a month’s time is impressive and is expected to be a well-received contribution to those affected by the landslide.
The handmade quilts donated include six large quilts, 10 large lap quilts, three small lap quilts and five baby quilts, for a total of 24 quilts.
Additional quilted donations include five table runners, one table topper, two placemats, two kids pillows and cases, one large lined bag, two potholders and a large shoebox filled with crocheted dish rags.
The quilt guild also donated non-quilted items, including a bedspread, scarf, mittens, pajamas and two large bags of new or gently used clothing.
The Peace by Piece Quilt Guild meets on the second Monday of every month at the Zion Philadelphia United Church of Christ fellowship hall.
