The LRS tennis team enjoyed two matches in the past week, after having the Medical Lake match rained out. LRS faced a solid St. George’s team, who provided tough competition, especially on the boys’ side.
The Broncos faced Reardan in an informal league match on Saturday, April 19. Due to the Easter holiday the following day, the Reardan team had a significant amount of players missing from their ranks.
Head coach Liz Melville said that the highlight of the day was the No. 1 singles match between Bronco athlete Travis Ste. Marie and Reardan’s Noah Ray. In a super tiebreaker match, Ste. Marie earned the win with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 12-10.
On April 21, the Broncos matched up against St. George’s in a league battle. The LRS boys suffered a 5-0 loss to the St. George’s powerhouse team, while the Bronco girls won the match 4-1. Melville said both teams had a lot of great matches, and the match provided the athletes with great experience.
Tracy Melville continued her successful season by defeating Darby Pierce. Tracy earned the No. 1 singles match win with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
“Tracy’s win against Darby was big as they are probably the two strongest girls in the league this year,” Melville said. “Darby is a very hard-hitting player, but Tracy’s quickness kept her in the points until she had a chance to go on the offensive herself.”
In the No. 2 singles competition, Manisha Singha defeated Bronco athlete Carissa Peavey 6-0, 6-4. Angela Howes won the No. 3 singles match for the Broncos by forfeit.
The Broncos’ No. 1 doubles team of Elizabeth Schofstoll and Kymberlee Webb defeated Marjalaine Chavin and Nicole Zhang, 6-1, 6-0. Soraida Chavez and Emily Boutain won the No. 2 doubles match by forfeit.
For the Bronco boys, the St. George’s team dominated the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Ste. Marie fell to Mark Hay in the No. 1 singles match with a score of 3-6, 0-6.
St. George’s athlete Jacob Martin defeated Justin Templin in the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Bronco athlete fell to Alex Poppell in the No. 3 singles match, 3-6, 2-6.
In the doubles matches, Nathan Furbeyre and Kenneth Day defeated the No. 1 Bronco team of Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday with a score of 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 2 doubles match, St. George’s athletes Case Martin and Patrick Asdorff defeated Zeth Swanger and Josh Yow 6-1, 6-2.
The Broncos host Chewelah in Ritzville on April 24 at 3:30 p.m., before traveling to Washtucna on April 26 to play LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus at 11 a.m.
