When President Obama granted amnesty to about 900,00 Latino immigrants (whose parents where illegals) I immediately thought of people I knew who followed the rules to become citizens. They were from Europe and they had gone through Ellis Island where they had to pass a physical and answer a lot of questions. I know of some who were rejected and sent back. The people who were approved found transportation to the homes of their sponsors where they stayed until they found work and places to live. Their sponsors were responsible for them until they were settled.
They wasted little time learning the English language and some of our customs. They started studying to pass the test that was required to become a citizen.
My parents had a Post Office and my mother was a teacher in a rural school. So they were asked a lot of questions and took great pleasure in helping these new people.
The adults were so proud when they could pass the citizenship test so they could vote! When people voted in those days they had to sign a register that was quite lengthy with it’s questions.
Does this sound different than Obama’s voting rules?
