LRS tennis begins league competition

The LRS Broncos took the court against Odessa-Harrington and Wilbur-Creston last week to officially kick off league competition.

The Broncos swept both league matches; with the boys winning by forfeit against Odessa-Harrington 4-0, and the girls defeating the same team 5-0. Both of the Broncos’ teams won matches against Wilbur-Creston 4-1.

During the girls’ match against Odessa-Harrington, the Broncos came out strong proving their strength as a team. The team started league competition on March 25.

In the No. 1 singles match, Tracy Melville defeated Cydnee Kieffer 6-2, 6-1, in the opening match of the day. Carissa Peavey defeated Laura Kinney 6-0, 6-4, in the girls’ No. 2 singles match.

Angela Howes won the No. 3 singles match by default.

The No. 1 Broncos doubles team of Kymberlee Webb and Elizabeth Schofstoll won with a 6-0, 6-0 match score. Emily Boutain and Soraida Chavez won by forfeit against the Odessa-Harrington No. 2 doubles team.

“I am seeing much improvement from both the boys and the girls,” head coach Liz Melville said after the match.

The following day, the team hosted Wilbur-Creston in the second league match of the season.

On the girls’ side, Tracy Melville continued her winning streak in the No. 1 singles competition by defeating Janae Dasef 6-1, 6-1. The only girls’ team to suffer a loss during the second league outing was the No. 1 doubles team of Schofstoll and Webb. Wilbur-Creston athletes Ireland Corrigan and Rhea Castrodale defeated the duo with a final score of 7-5, 6-2.

The Broncos boys’ team found success in their first official league match, being led by both doubles and singles players.

Travis Ste. Marie started the boys’ winning by defeating Jacob Paunovich 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 singles match. The Broncos’ No. 1 doubles team of Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday also secured a win against Wilbur-Creston by defeating Andrew Peterson and Mason Copeland in a hard-fought 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, match.

The Broncos do not have any games during spring break, but return to the courts on April 8 to face Davenport in Ritzville.LRS tennis begins league competition
