The Broncos are taking five wrestlers to Colfax on Saturday for the sub-regional match, commencing their pursuit of a trip to the state wrestling tournament.
Four of the Broncos’ wrestlers will automatically advance to the regional tournament a week from now.
Each weight class advances six wrestlers to the regional event. There are six or fewer wrestlers competing in the sub-regional event in those weight classes.
Head coach Jason Hilzer said Matthias Ferderer at 106 pounds; Huang Vu, 152; Matt Vercoe, 220; and Layne Hawks at 285 should automatically advance barring injury or disqualification.
Karl Hawks will need a win or two this Saturday to earn a trip to the regional event at 195 pounds.
Hilzer said all of the LRS wrestlers need to strive for the best possible seed in to the regional event.
Those who end up seeded fifth or sixth in a weight class end up facing the top opponents first.
“It’s important to finish well so the bracket is a little easier,” Hilzer said. “That will give them the best shot to make it to state.”
