LRS wrestlers continue to gain mat experience

The LRS Broncos wrestlers have been getting in steady work. Last Thursday they hosted their only home match of the season, enjoying the hometown crowd. The Jan. 9 match featured wrestlers from White Swan, Waitsburg-Prescott and Pomeroy.

Hoang Vu wrestled at 145 pounds against Clayton King of Pomeroy and lost by pin. He then went against Kavin Kuykendall of WP and lost by pin.

Karl Hawks wrestled at 182 against Manuel Vidrios of White Swan and lost by pin. Hawks then wrestled DJ Lalka of WP and won by pin.

Matt Vercoe wrestled at 220 against Robert Garza White Swan, winning by pin. He then wrestled Giovanni Rios of White Swan and ended up losing by pin.

Layne Hawks wrestled at 285 against Salvador Esquivel of White Swan, losing by score of 12-3. He then wrestled Tristen Newman of WP and ended up losing by pin.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, the LRS wrestling team traveled to a tournament in Springdale.

Caeli Ulrich saw her first action this season. She wrestled a unidentified girl from East Valley in Spokane and lost by pin. She then went against Rachael Colek of East Valley and wrestled tough but lost by pin. Her last match was against a girl from Chewelah who also pinned Ulrich.

Vu wrestled Taylor Flesher of Kettle Falls and lost by pin. He then went against a wrestler from Almira-Coulee/Hartline and lost by pin.

Karl Hawks wrestled Josiah Buster of Riverside and won by pin. He then wrestled Lane Cliffner of Springdale and lost by pin. In the third match Karl then wrestled Taylor Robinsin of Oroville and lost by pin to finish in fifth place.

Vercoe wrestled Evan Lord of Colfax and lost by pin. He then met against Kevin Winder of Liberty and won by pin. Vercoe then wrestled Joe Luback of Newport and lost by pin to finish fourth.

Layne wrestled Alex Solis of Newport and was down 4-2 when he was rolled and pinned. He then wrestled Nick McAdams of Colfax and got caught in a throw and was pinned to finish fifth.

“Overall I was pleased with the progress of our dedicated wrestlers,” said head coach Jason Hilzer.
