Alberta E. Baker

Alberta E. Baker died Jan. 7 at her home in Sequim, Wash. Alberta was born Sept. 6, 1940, to Clarence and Lula Strattonin in Mack, Wash., at home alongside the Union Pacific Railroad.

She moved to Marengo when she was one. She went to school in nearby Ritzville where she graduated from high school in 1958. She graduated from Spokane Dental Assistant College in 1959.

Alberta married Duncan Dunn in June 1959 and had two boys, Russell D. Dunn and Luke A. Dunn. Alberta and Duncan lived in Othello and Prosser before moving to Pullman. Alberta worked as greeting card buyer then pharmacy technician, before becoming the bookkeeper in 1978 at Corner Drug in Pullman. She remained with Corner Drug until retiring in 1993.

Alberta later married Dick Baker in 1992 and was married for six years before his death in 1998. Alberta and Dick spent one year living in Malaysia while Dick was on a teaching sabbatical at a university. She enjoyed her time there and often commented that the experience broadened her world view.

Alberta and Dick moved back to Pullman and then became involved in the Pullman Community Theater production before moving to Sequim. Alberta’s love of the beach and Dick’s love of the mountains inspired Dick and Alberta to purchase a beach home north of Sequim where they moved to in 1997.

Alberta married Fred Code in November 2003 and continued to live at the beach home. Fred and Alberta loved to travel to see family and friends. Fred took Alberta on road trip to Albuquerque, NM, stopping at many sites along the way. Alberta and Fred enjoyed serving in the Stephen Ministry class at church. They enjoyed reading books, listening to music and dining out together. Alberta enjoyed music, theatre, quilting, gardening, birds, and poetry. Alberta had several poems published over the years. Her greatest joy in life came from her friends and family, which she held close to her heart. She modeled her life around Christ’s role model of love, peace and generosity. She always thought of others first giving her time and herself to help others in need.

Alberta is survived by a sister, Dora Kramer of Ritzville; sons Russell Dunn (Sherie) of Snoqualmie, and Luke Dunn (Mitzi) of Walla Walla; stepsons Frank Baker (Nell) of Concord, Calif, Ernie Baker (Sandra) and Robert Baker (Emily); four Dunn grandchildren: Sarah, Trevor, Jeffrey and Kelly; and five Baker grandchildren: Loren, Joanna, Jessica, Jarred and Anabel, along with many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters from the 1958 graduating class of Ritzville.

Services will be held Jan. 18 at the Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church in Sequim, at 2 p.m.

Donations can be made in Alberta’s honor to the Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, Inc. 540 E. 8th street, Port Angeles WA, 98362.
