Friday’s road trip to St. John-Endicott proved to be a major mismatch in basketball as the LRS Broncos rolled to an 82-14 win in the nonleague tilt.
The game served as a scoring milestone for point guard Dylan Hartz. He crossed the career 1,000-point scoring mark on Friday night, adding another top accomplishment to his storied high school career.
“He’s done it pretty early in his senior year so he will have a good grand total when he’s finished,” head coach Dustan Arlt said. Arlt is among the elite group of Ritzville basketball players who have recorded 1,000 points in their high school careers.
As for the overall game, Arlt said SJE is young and lacking the size necessary to defend against the Broncos’ posts.
The weekend was the start of a new lineup for LRS. Arlt opted to add Cort Ruzicka to the starting five, leading out with three post players.
Arlt also felt the Broncos had a better rhythm and turned in a solid four quarter performance.
“We looked more like a basketball team with focus and intensity,” Arlt said. “That’s what it looked like right away. We played well. We made it happen pretty quick.”
The Broncos went on a 29-0 run in the second quarter.
“That’s hard to do against anybody,” Arlt said. “We got 14 kids into the game and they all played several minutes each.”
Ryan Whitmore led the scoring with 13. Connor O’Neill and Tyler Frederick each scored 12. Ruzicka scored nine while Hartz had eight. Logan Morley finished with six.
The LRS boys pounded Royal in nonleague play at home on Saturday, 73-34.
O’Neill paced the team with 17 points. Hartz scored 16 and Frederick provided 13. Whitmore added nine points.
“We just came out focused and took it to them and played good man defense,” Arlt said. “The first couple of minutes we had a little bit of a slow start. The third quarter was the big difference.”
The Broncos now head to Liberty on Friday for a key league match up. Saturday they host Odessa-Harrington in a nonleague outing.
“We have to play big defense and stay out of foul trouble which has been a problem sometimes against them,” Arlt said of the Liberty game.
