Clara Elizabeth Reames

Clara Elizabeth Vehrs
Jacobs Reames died on Nov. 22 at the age of 99. Clara, one of seven sisters and one brother, was born on Aug. 27, 1914, on the family farm in Ritzville,
to Hans Vehrs and Maria Brockling Vehrs.

Clara and her husband, Harry, raised their family on a small farm in Opportunity, Wash., where they were taught from an early age the discipline, joys and blessings of a farming way of life. Clara led a long, creative life, rich in varied experiences. Clara was an active member of over 30 years in the Bethel Nazarene Church of Spokane where she played the organ and piano, taught
Sunday school and volunteered in many areas of Christian services for her church. Clara, with her mother, Mary Vehrs, were on the board of Northwest Christian High
School in the early 1950’s and served as secretary of the board. She also spent many hours helping with the remodeling of the buildings to turn them into classrooms for the new campus, which was located on North Central Street in Spokane.

In the early 1960’s Clara attended Comptometer School, which led to employment at Armour & Company. There she met Ted Reames, the purchasing agent, and they were married in February 1963. They enjoyed life together raising a beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables, remodeling their home, and doing some traveling. Ted passed away in 1982.

Clara became a faithful member of Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church in December 1967, and continued to serve her Lord in various capacities, including as a Deacon for a period of time. Clara was well known for her cooking skills and recipes, which included cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, and her Corn AuGratin recipe which is served by her children and grandchildren all over the U.S.

Clara was an expert seamstress, making many of her own garments, wedding dresses for her daughters and granddaughters and garments for her great-grandchildren. But, above all, Clara was known, loved and appreciated as a prayer warrior, and her daily reading of the Bible which she read many times over. Clara engaged in many acts of Christian love and kindnesses.

Her sisters, Violet, Alice, Rosa, Mamie, Virginia and brother, Richard, preceded her in death. Her sister, Joan Vehrs Gering and her husband, Martin, survive her. Clara married Harry Jacobs in 1934 who passed away in 1957. They had four children, all of whom survive her: Barbara (Bobbie) Tedrow, Coupeville, Wash .; Jerry Jacobs, Oakland, Cali .; Harvey (Jan) Jacobs, San Antonio, Texas; and Sharon Reames, Chattaroy, Wash. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive Clara.

A memorial service will be held at the Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road in Spokane on Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in Tiffany Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, Deacon Fund or a charity of your choice.
