The Lady Tigercats faced two hard-hitting teams in the last week, falling in a match to Pomeroy followed by a marginal loss against Rosalia.
The Lady Tigercats faced Pomeroy on Thursday and were defeated in three sets with scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-17.
Head coach Sarah Mayer said the match was an overall improvement for the team, as the girls maintained solid communication on the court throughout the games. The team has been inconsistent with communication throughout the season, which has been attributed to some of the team’s losses.
“They were very determinate and refused to give up,” Mayer said of last Thursdays match.
“As we are winding down our league season, we are still focusing on serve receive. We continue to focus on passing fundamentals as well as reviewing positional territories and covering the seams,” Mayer said. “Our serving percentage has slowly dropped and so we have practiced serving and placement of serves. As a team we have talked about getting the critical serves over and being consistent servers.”
The Lady Tigercats relied on their senior leadership and positivity from players to keep battling against the Lady Pirates. Senior athletes Kadie Whinery and Lindsey Miller controlled the rest of the stats, with Miller putting up five assists and one ace, and Whinery contributing five digs and one ace. Brooklynn Hostetler led the team in kills with four.
“Brooklynn Hostetler was a strong leader throughout the Pomeroy, she remained positive, encouraged the team and worked hard both offensively and defensively,” Mayer said.
The Lady Tigercats went on the road Tuesday night and Mayer said the team was excited for the match against Rosalia as it was expected to be a close competition. Rosalia barely took the win over the Lady Tigercats who battled to the last point in every match.
The Lady Tigercats handily won the first set over Rosalia 25-11, but the Lady Spartans battled back to take the second set win 25-20. The third game of the night proved to be the toughest fought when the Lady Tigercats finally earned the win, 26-24.
The Lady Tigercats again fell to Rosalia in the fourth set, 25-20, and pushed the match to the fifth and final set. Again, the Lady Tigercats pushed to the last point but Rosalia snuck past to take the overall match win, 15-13.
Even though the Lady Tigercats suffered a loss, the team put up impressive numbers for the night and worked efficiently as a team to keep the match close. Hostetler stepped up again to lead the team in kills with 14.
Miller contributed to her teammates success at the net by putting up 12 assists on the night. Whinery controlled the court for the Lady Tigercats, racking up 20 digs, one block and three aces.
The Lady Tigercats are now prepping for the final league game of the season against Colton.
The match is being played in LaCrosse at 5 p.m. on Thursday and also serves as senior night for Whinery and Miller.
