Sheriff reminds residents to be safe on Halloween

On Halloween night, ghosts, goblins, vampires and more roam the streets as local youth set out to collect treats from residents.

Adams County Sheriff John Hunt is reminding adults and children alike to take precautions and stay safe during the nighttime event.

Parents are reminded that children ages 12 and under should always be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating. Children over the age of 12 should agree upon a route with an adult before they leave the home.

All children’s costumes should fit well, be flame retardant and not obscure the visibility of the child.

Trick-or-treaters are asked to carry a flashlight or glow stick when outdoors at night.

Hunt advised parents to visit the Adams County Sheriff’s Department website, or contact any local law enforcement agency, for registered offenders in the area. Hunt also asks parents to teach their children never to enter a home without permission from a supervising adult and only approach houses that are well lit.

All candy trick-or-treaters collect should not be consumed until the child returns home, Hunt said, and all candy that is not factory wrapped should be disposed of, unless the child knows the giver of the treat well.

Hunt said children should trust their instincts and if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe in a situation, they should leave the situation and tell a trusted adult about the incident.

Hunt also recommends children attend Halloween parties at home, schools or community organized events as a safe alternative to trick-or-treating.
