If you are a fan of the Broncos’ football program, then you won’t want to miss this Friday’s gridiron jamboree in Lind.
The defending 2B state champions will play host to some of the best 2B teams in Eastern Washington during this year’s live action scrimmage. While most of the jamborees have featured larger schools and non league opponents, this year’s outing with include opponents the Broncos will meet in regular season play.
NE 2B League members Colfax, Reardan, Northwest Christian and Springdale will make the trip to Lind this week. They will be joined by Kittitas.
Head coach Greg Whitmore said the jamboree is the first opportunity for game speed and true contact on the edge of the start of the regular season. It’s an important walk through for all the teams, as they use the film from the jamboree to tie up loose ends and focus coaching on the areas where the team or individual players need to improve.
The national attention to concussions during football has led to a reduction in hitting and other contact drills during preseason practices. The jamboree will be the first time, since the team camp at Whitworth, that the Broncos take and deliver hits.
“We will get to feel these bumps and bruises,” Whitmore said.
The annual Lind-Ritzville/Sprague high school football jamboree is being played in Lind this year due to the ongoing construction of an all-weather track at Jimmie Snider Field in Ritzville.
The jamboree kicks off the football season on Friday, Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lind football field. The LRS Broncos are hosting 12 football teams (varsity and junior varsity squads) in this year’s jamboree.
The cost for admittance to the jamboree is $3, and season passes are not accepted.
The jamboree is played in a round robin format with six varsity teams and six junior varsity teams competing. Each team receives 40 plays total, 20 on offense and 20 on defense, during the mini-scrimmage.
There is no score kept, and kicking or special teams are not allowed during the jamboree.
The Lind field is located next to Lind-Ritzville Middle School at 507 North E Street.
