Railcar fire ties up Lind crew for 7 hours

Lind Fire Department responded to a railcar fire on Saturday afternoon about a half mile west of Lind on a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train. Lind Fire Department Chief Kevin Starring explained the initial radio call toned out just after 12 p.m. for three railcars on fire, with a potential chemical reaction of lithium batteries.

Lind crews responded to the scene to discover smoke coming from a single trailer on the train, Starring said.

The crews were unable to immediately extinguish the fire because of the uncertainty of a possible chemical reaction.
