Home Team...

Ever since the word went around that there was going to be an alumni football game, there was a great deal of chuckling about former players getting hurt and taken off on a stretcher, or pulling a muscle, or running out of gas while jogging onto the field just for the pregame stretch.

I’m more than a little bit jealous of these youngsters from another era. You might say, well that was your decision to not play. And yes it was. I had a thought, or two to suit up and beg to do punting duties or even kickoff, but sometimes a person is better off staying out of the way.

Oh yeah, there is a knee replacement that I had done nearly eight years attached to me, which I’m hoping will keep treating me kindly.

I’m hoping for a good crowd and a good game. I also hope many of the fans and players also make their way downtown this weekend to the Western Art Show. A full weekend of activities is very important, don’t you think?

It is hard to try to predict what will happen during the game, but there has been a fair amount of practice time taking place so they are taking this game seriously. The game is a fundraiser as well, and for grown men who haven’t played for a number of years, to shell out close to $100 to play for fun and for just one more game is admirable.

I know of at least one Lind Bulldog that I coached who will be in action on Saturday. Rumor has it that there will be a few more. I’m looking forward to seeing them again and wishing them luck and hope they have fun and of course give a great effort.

I’ve heard that there has been a lot of tickets sold so far, and hopefully a lot more will be sold before kickoff on Saturday at noon. This is a great opportunity to show these former athletes how much you appreciate them and their contribution to this fun moneymaker.

I’m hoping that there will be a lot of members of the 2012 state football champions watching and cheering. The guys that are playing in this game are just a few years or decades removed from where you are right now. There are former state champions and a few that were runner-ups and semi-finalists.

There will be many more that may not have played for the big ball, but were every bit as talented as the top players from the 2012 team. That they didn’t play on a team loaded with talented ball players doesn’t take away from what they gave to Bronco football, which was a lot.

By the way, many of the state championship players are finally getting a rest from competitive sport. The team went from a long football season and playoffs, to basketball and a state tournament berth making the semi-finals, to baseball and making the state playoffs before dropping a first round loser out game to Liberty Bell. Congratulations on a very successful year. Take a breather before you start summer sport camps next week. And pat yourselves on the back because you had a great season.

To those athletes that are still involved with track and tennis we wish you the very best.

For all of us who live for football, this Saturday will be a lot of fun.

Root for the home team, by the way, how are we going to determine the home team?

Oh that’s right odds and evens so since this is an odd year will the odds be home? I hope you figure it out before Saturday!!
