Bronco tennis team preps for district tourney

The LRS tennis team is preparing for the district competition on Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10, for the chance to move on to the sub-regional contest. The LRS team hosted the Seconds Tournament in Ritzville on Friday, May 2, and had five athletes qualify for the district tournament.

The Seconds Tournament provides all number two seeded singles and doubles athletes to compete in a loser-out competition, with the victors earning a chance to compete at districts.

Lindy Brown earned a spot at the district tournament by winning her first two matches at the Seconds Tournament, including a tough three-set match against St. George’s Minisha Singha. Brown has found success on the court this year as the number two singles player for the LRS girls’ team.

Carissa Peavey, number three singles player for the LRS team, qualified for districts by winning her first match at the Seconds Tournament against Davenport. Peavey lost her second match of the tournament to LaCrosse-Washtucna athlete, Brooklynn Hostetler.

Number two singles player for the Broncos, Stephen Ulrich, lost his first match after he suffered a tough draw and had to face St. George’s number three singles player. The first match loss knocked Ulrich from the tournament and stopped him short of qualifying for districts.

Justin Templin stepped up to win his first match against a tough Davenport opponent and the win provided him the opportunity to compete in the district tournament, even though he lost his second match of the day.

In the number two doubles competition, Rachel Barrus and Kymberlee Webb secured their chance to compete at district by winning their first match at the Seconds Tournament. The duo lost the second match of the tournament to Reardan’s number two doubles team.

The LRS Broncos girls’ team has athletes Kelly Melville, Alanna Wheeler, Barrus, Webb, Tracy Melville, Brown and Peavey all continuing on to compete in districts. On the boys’ side of the team, Alex Wheeler, Kyle Canaday, Zach Swanger and Templin have all earned the opportunity to play in the district tournament.

The team members qualifying for districts will travel to West Valley High School to compete in the district tournament on May 9-10.
