LRS tennis sweeps match against Reardan Indians

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team hosted a practice match in Ritzville on April 11 against Medical Lake. The match ended in favor of the LRS girls’ team, and the number one singles and doubles team remains undefeated so far this season.

In the girls’ number one singles match Tracy Melville continued her flawless season by defeating Medical Lake’s Rachel Hansen 6-0, 6-1. Lindy Brown beat Becky Nix 6-2, 6-4 in the girls’ number two singles match.

In the number three girls’ single match, Broncos athlete Carissa Peavey was defeated by Medical Lake’s Mary Lowan 6-4, 6-2.

In the girls’ doubles competition, number one doubles players Kelly Melville and Alanna Wheeler swept the court for a win. The undefeated doubles team beat Amy Ryan and Annette Carlson 6-2, 6-0.

The number two doubles team of Rachel Barrus and Kymberlee Webb fell to the Medical Lake team of Alyssa Fitzgerald and Katelyn Houger 6-1, 6-2.

On the boys’ side, the LRS Broncos ended the day with a record of 2-3, winning the number one doubles match and the number three singles match.

The competition started with Zach Swanger playing Hunter Barr in the number one singles match. The boys tied the match after Barr won the first set and Swanger the second, both ending in a 7-5 score.

In the super tiebreaker, Barr took the win from Swanger with a final score of 11-9.

Justin Templin played in the number two singles match against Antone King and was defeated 7-5, 6-1. Stephen Ulrich stepped up in the number three singles match against Jon Pineda and earned the Broncos’ boys the first win of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 score.

The number one doubles team of Alex Wheeler and Kyle Canaday continued their winning season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Harrison Cochran and Dakota Haugen from Medical Lake.

In the number two doubles match, Austin Brown and Brad Norris defeated Zeth Swanger and Ethan Melville 6-2, 6-3.

On Saturday, April 13, the Broncos faced Reardan in a league competition and the LRS boys and girls’ teams each won 5-0. Reardan did not have enough boys to play in full matches and forfeited the number one, two and three singles matches.

In the number one doubles match, Alex Wheeler and Canaday played a solid match against Anthony Sigs and Vaugn Lodge, winning the match 7-6, 6-1. The number two doubles team of Zeth Swanger and Ste. Marie has equal success and defeated Nolan McMurry and Moss Gray 6-2, 6-1.

Tracy Melville continues to be a force on the court and swept the number one singles match with a score of 6-0, 6-0 over Reardan’s Miranda Bazo. Brown battled against Melissa Macabeo and won 6-2, 6-1.

The highlight of the day was the number three singles competition between Peavey and Mikeyla McCoy. Peavey was trailing early in the match, but coach Melville said she made adjustments and tried new things in order to win the singles match 4-6, 6-0, 10-6.

Kelly Melville and Alanna Wheeler won the number ones doubles competition 6-0, 6-0 over Morgan Fredericks and Bailey Bennett. The day ended with the final Bronco win of the day by Barrus and Webb in the number two doubles match, who won 6-2, 6-3.

The Broncos host a home match against the LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats on Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. in Ritzville.
