The LaCrosse-Washtucna tennis team began season matches on March 19 in Reardan and traveled to Ritzville on Saturday, March 23, to compete in a jamboree.
During both of the preseason competitions, the Tigercats traveled with reduced numbers of athletes and without any boy’s doubles team.
Against Reardan, the Tigercats number one singles player Justin Wargo suffered a loss to Max Mielke, 6-1, 6-4. On the girls’ side, number one singles player Lura Potter defeated Michaela Holden 6-1, 6-0 for the first win of the season.
First year tennis player Brooklynn Hostetler received her first win of her tennis career with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Quina Casch in the number two singles match. Douglas McKeen lost to veteran athlete Jarod Regan in the number two singles match with a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Delaney Stewart played a pro-set match against Holden, losing 0-8 in number three singles.
The Tigercats number one girls doubles team of Chelsie Kneale and Amber McCabe earned their first win of the season by defeating Reardan’s Sarah Guhlke and Marissa Brown, 6-0, 6-3.
The Tigercats traveled to Ritzville on Saturday to play in jamboree matches against athletes from Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, Wilbur-Creston and Odessa-Harrington.
The most intense match of the day was played between Wargo and LRS athlete Zach Swanger. The match ended in a tie after two sets, but eventually went in favor of Swanger who defeated Wargo with a score of 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
Potter faced Tracy Melville in the girls’ number one singles match and lost to Melville 6-2, 6-3. Potter went on to play a pro-set against Broncos’ Lindy Brown. The set ended in a 6-6 tie, resulting in a tiebreaker, 6-8, 1-6.
In the number three singles contest, McKeen lost a pro-set match to Broncos’ Grant Wengeler, 8-0. McKeen then faced Josh Yow in another pro-set match, also being defeated with an 8-4 score.
Stewart played Shelby Watkins from Odessa-Harrington in the number three singles match, losing to Watkins 8-3.
McCabe and Kneale won both pro-set matches in the doubles competition at the jamboree. The team earned the first win over Broncos’ Brooke Pichette and Elizabeth Schofstoll, 8-6. Kneale and McCabe then moved on to defeat Wilbur-Creston’s doubles team 8-0.
