LRS tennis thrives in pre-season

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague tennis team has competed in a variety of non-league matches to prepare for the league season to begin this week.

The Broncos started with a non-league match against Freeman on Thursday, March 14, and the LRS girls played Odessa-Harrington on March 19. The Broncos hosted a jamboree in Ritzville on Saturday, March 23, with Wilbur-Creston, LaCrosse-Washtucna and Odessa-Harrington traveling to compete.

Against Freeman, the Broncos only played pro-sets in order for every athlete to gain court time. All of the Broncos’ singles players won their matches against Freeman’s athletes.

Tracy Melville defeated Andie Olson 8-6 in the girls’ number one singles match, while Lindy Brown beat Morgan DeRuyter 8-6 in the number two singles match. Zach Swanger won the number one singles match for the boys with an 8-1 win over Jordan Warnecke. Stephen Ulrich defeated Ben Mitchell 8-2 in the boys’ number two singles match.

In doubles play, Kelly Melville and Alanna Wheeler won the number one doubles match 8-2 over Freeman’s Kristin Talbott and Kailyn Gady. The Broncos’ number one doubles team of Kyle Canaday and Alex Wheeler lost to Kadgin Anderson and Alec Olson with a score of 8-4.

In the number two doubles matches, Justin Templin and Grant Wengeler defeated Mason Mackleit and Spencer Warnecke 8-4. Rachel Barrus and Kymberlee Webb fell to Freeman’s Carissa Perry and Mindy Hansen with a score of 8-4.

In the number three doubles competition, Broncos’ athletes Carissa Peavey and Amanda Yockey fell to Ryenn Groves and Anna Lee, 8-6, while Zeth Swanger and Travis Ste. Marie won their match 9-7.

The Bronco girls traveled to Odessa-Harrington, where the team had to battle in what head coach Liz Melville described as tornado-type conditions. The Odessa-Harrington team consists only of female athletes, and the Broncos swept the competition.

Tracy Melville earned the first win of the day in the number one singles competition with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Cydnee Kiefer. Kelly Melville and Wheeler defeated Shelby Watkins and Morgan Marchland 6-0, 6-0, in the number one doubles match.

Three matches were won by default for the Broncos: Brown won by default in the number two singles match, Yockey won by default in the number three singles match, and Barrus and Webb won by default in the number two doubles match.

The Saturday jamboree provided another opportunity for all Bronco athletes to earn court time. The two highlighted matches of the day were between the number one singles players for both the boys and girls.

Tracy Melville earned a hard fought win over LaCrosse-Washtucna athlete, Lura Potter, with a 6-2, 6-3 score. Zach Swanger battled against Justin Wargo from LaCrosse-Washtucna in a match lasting over two hours and ending in a tie after two games. Swanger eventually took the win with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 score over Wargo.
